When is the best time to go?

April to June and September to October are the ideal periods for an Athens city break: temperatures of 20 to 28 degrees, mild sun and shorter queues at the Acropolis. May is the absolute highlight: spring in the city, blooming jacaranda trees in Neos Kosmos and the Acropolis Museum is at its least crowded on weekday mornings.

July and August are 35 degrees or more: the Acropolis is sweltering and at its most touristy. Combine summer in Athens with a short island hop (Aegina or Hydra, less than 1 hour by ferry).

November to March is cheap and quiet: flights sometimes 40% below summer prices, but changeable weather (sun and rain alternating). December and the Christmas period are dry and pleasant (14 to 18 degrees). The Acropolis is open from 8:00 to 20:00 (summer) or 8:00 to 17:00 (winter).

The best neighborhoods in Athens

• Plaka The historic centre directly below the Acropolis: neoclassical houses, tavernas with bouzouki, small museums and craft shops. Touristy but atmospheric for a first evening. Come early in the morning for quiet streets.
• Monastiraki The real urban core of Athens: flea market on Sundays (Avissinias Square), food stands along Athanasiou Diakou Street (souvlaki, spanakopita, loukoumades) and the best rooftop bar in the city with Acropolis views (360 Bar).
• Koukaki Hippest neighbourhood in 2026: specialty coffee cafes, boutiques by local designers and a good mid-range hotel selection. 10 minutes walk from the Acropolis entrance, less touristy than Plaka but equally well located.
• Exarchia Anarchist and bohemian: political street art, second-hand bookshops, cheap food in neighbourhood restaurants and lively nightlife. Safe during the day but stay alert at night (pickpockets in dark alleys).
• Glyfada / Vouliagmeni Athens' beach coastline 20 to 30 minutes from the centre by tram (line T3). In summer it adds the relaxation that many city breaks lack: beach bars, crystal-clear water and the upscale Astir Beach (entry approx. €20). Vouliagmeni Lake is a warm mineral-water lake in a rocky inlet (entry €15).

Food and drink in Athens

Athens is one of the best food cities in the Mediterranean. Gyros pita (meat, tzatziki, tomato, onion in pitta bread) costs around €3 to 4 at a souvladzidiko (souvlaki joint) such as the legendary Kostas at Pentelis 2 (Syntagma).

Loukoumades (Greek donuts with honey and cinnamon) are the best street snack for €2 to 3. A mezze evening at a taverna (ouzo, various small dishes, salad, fish or meat) averages €20 to 30 per person.

Less known: the Varvakeios market (Athens' central market hall) on Athinas Street is the most authentic spot for an early breakfast (7:00-9:00): reasonably priced fish, meat and vegetables, plus a cheap coffee breakfast at the surrounding kafenions.

Visit the coffee neighbourhoods of Monastiraki and Thissio for specialty coffee at Taf Coffee (Greece's first specialty coffee bar) or Little Tree Books and Coffee.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands

From Eindhoven you fly direct with Transavia to Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) in about 3 hours 15; from Schiphol also with KLM and Aegean Airlines.

From the airport, metro line 3 (M3) takes you to the centre (€9 one way, or a 3-day tourist ticket including the airport €20), or take the X95 bus to Syntagma for €5.50. In the city a metro or bus ride costs €1.20 (valid 90 minutes) and a 24-hour pass €4.10. For a day trip to Cape Sounion or Delphi, a rental car via DiscoverCars is the most practical option.
