Friday to Sunday: the plan

Friday: arrival and Plaka

  • Take Metro Line 3 (blue) directly from the airport to Syntagma Square: 40 minutes, €9 single. The 72-hour tourist pass costs €20 and is worth it for the whole weekend.
  • Drop your bag and walk to Plaka: the oldest neighbourhood of Athens, directly below the Acropolis. The alleyways of Anafiotika look like a Cycladic village.
  • Dinner in Psyrri: the hipster neighbourhood with some of the best street food in Athens. Souvlaki at a local taverna costs €3-4, a full meal with a glass of wine around €15.

Saturday: Acropolis and museums

  • Start early at the Acropolis: be there before 9am to beat the tour groups. Buy the combo ticket online in advance (€36, includes the Acropolis Museum, Agora and 4 other sites, valid 5 days).
  • After the Acropolis, visit the Acropolis Museum (€20, free for EU residents under 25 with valid ID). One of Europe's finest archaeological museums, with the original Parthenon sculptures.
  • Afternoon in Monastiraki: flea market, small cafes and street food. Sunset from the rooftop terrace of one of the bars overlooking the Acropolis.

Sunday: National Garden and departure

  • Morning stroll through the National Garden (free, open from 7am): central park right in the heart of the city, ideal for a quiet start.
  • Catch the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Syntagma Square at 11am: the Evzones in traditional costume, every Sunday a full ceremony with music.
  • Metro back to the airport: allow 1.5 hours before departure. The airport is large and security queues can be long in summer.
