- Colosseum time slot required Always book your Colosseum ticket in advance at colosseo.it. Tickets cost 18 euros including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill; the Full Experience with the arena floor costs 24 euros. Without a reservation you face hours of queuing or may not get in at all.
- Vatican Museums Book online for 22 euros (26 euros at the desk). On the last Sunday of the month the museums are free from 09:00 to 14:00, but the queues are enormous. The Sistine Chapel is included in the standard ticket.
- ZTL zone Rome's historic centre is a ZTL restricted traffic zone. Driving without a permit leads to automatic fines via cameras. Do not hire a car if you are staying in the centre. A hire car is useful for day trips to Tivoli or Castel Gandolfo.
- Drinking water fountains (nasoni) Free drinking water fountains called "nasoni" are found all over the city. Rome's tap water is excellent quality; bring a refillable bottle and save on bottled water.

Which catacombs in Rome are worth visiting?
The Via Appia Antica has the most impressive catacombs. The Catacombs of San Callisto are the largest: 20 kilometres of tunnels on four levels, an early Christian bishop's cemetery and multiple popes buried here (open Thu-Tue, closed Wed). Entrance is 8 euros, including a 45-minute guided tour.
Nearby are the Catacombs of San Sebastiano (also 8 euros, closed Sun). The Catacomb of Priscilla in northern Rome has the oldest known Christian paintings, but is harder to reach. Take bus 660 or 118 from the centre to the Via Appia Antica (about 25 minutes). Allow 2 to 3 hours to visit both Appia catacombs.
