- Low season: January and February Flights to Athens are cheapest then, from around 120-160 euros return. Hotels are 30-40% cheaper than summer and you almost have the Acropolis to yourself. In January and February temperatures are 12-15 degrees, ideal for sightseeing but too cold for the beach.
- Flights from Eindhoven: Transavia direct Transavia flies several times a week direct from Eindhoven Airport (EIN) to Athens (ATH) in about 3 hours 5 minutes in summer. From Schiphol, Transavia, KLM (up to 17x/week) and Aegean Airlines also fly direct to Athens.
- Best value: April-May and September-October Temperatures of 18-26 degrees, the sea is still warm in September, 20-30% cheaper than August and considerably less crowded. Note: Greek Easter (20 April 2026) draws extra visitors with higher hotel prices around it.
Free and cheap sights
- Areopagus (Mars Hill): free panoramic viewpoint next to the Acropolis This rocky hill directly next to the Acropolis entrance offers a spectacular free view over the ancient agora and the Acropolis. Always accessible, no ticket needed. Popular at sunset.
- Filopappou Hill: 15-25 minutes walk, superb views Follow a wooded path to the top where the Acropolis stands right in front of you, sunset included. Completely free and one of the best photo spots in the city. Enter via Dionysiou Areopagitou.
- Changing of the guard at Syntagma Square: every Sunday 11:00 The impressive grand changing of the Evzone guards in front of the Parliament is free to watch, with a smaller changing every hour daily. Very photogenic.
- Monastiraki flea market: free, biggest on Sundays Near Monastiraki Square a flea market with antiques, souvenirs and local snacks spreads out every day. On Sundays it is at its busiest and most extensive, but always free to stroll through.
- EU citizens under 25: Acropolis free As an EU citizen under 25 you enter the Acropolis for free. Pre-book a free timed-entry ticket at hhticket.gr, as even free tickets are subject to a daily cap.
Cheap transport in Athens
From Athens International Airport (ATH) to the centre there are two affordable options. Metro Line 3 (blue line) costs 9 euros single and takes 40 minutes to Syntagma Square. Express bus X95 runs 24/7 for 5.50 euros (60-75 minutes, depending on traffic). A single OV ticket within the city costs 1.20 euros. A 3-day tourist pass for all public transport (metro, bus, tram) costs 22 euros and is useful if you travel a lot.
Budget eating in Athens
Athens is wonderfully affordable outside the main tourist streets. A souvlaki pita (filled pitta with meat, tzatziki and chips) costs 3.00-4.50 euros at a local souvlaki stall. At restaurants around Monastiraki Square or the pedestrian Ermou Street you pay twice as much. Instead head to the Koukaki neighbourhood (15 minutes walk from the Acropolis), where a full meal at a neighbourhood restaurant costs 12-15 euros. Varvakios Agora (Central Market on Athinas Street, between Monastiraki and Omonia) is the best place for a fresh lunch for 8-10 euros and a window into the real Athens.
