May, June and September are ideal: 23 to 28 degrees, warm enough for the beach without the packed-summer crowds of August. July is also great but August fills up with Italian holidaymakers and hotels become significantly more expensive. September is the best-value month: water is still 24 degrees and beaches are quieter. The best areas in Alghero
- Centro Storico (Old Town) The historic peninsula surrounded by 16th-century bastions. Catalan-Gothic architecture, narrow lanes (carrerons) and Piazza Civica as the beating heart. Restaurants, shops and local life. The best area to stay.
- Bastioni (Sea Walls) The fortified walls with walking paths on the sea side. Cafes and terraces on the bastions with spectacular sea views. The Bastioni Marco Polo and Bastioni Magellano offer the best sunset view. Arrive 30 minutes before sunset to get a good spot.
- Lido San Giovanni + Maria Pia The beach area directly north of the old town. Fine white sand bordered by a pine forest, shallow crystal-clear water. Mix of free zones and paid sunbed areas (around €10 to 20 per sunbed per day). Walkable from the old town.
- Via Roma/Portici Covered arcades and the adjacent Via Roma: the commercial centre next to the old town. Local shops, Sardinian ceramics and produce. Quieter than the main tourist streets.
- Fertilia Village 8 km north, near the airport. Built in the 1930s as a Fascist "model town." Rationalist architecture and quiet atmosphere. Good base for Porto Conte Regional Nature Park and beaches to the north.
