Your weekend plan, day by day

  • Friday: arrival and Trastevere Fly Friday evening from Eindhoven Airport to Rome Fiumicino in 2 hours 10 minutes. Leonardo Express to Termini for 14 euros in 30 minutes, then metro or bus to your accommodation. First evening in Trastevere: the narrowest medieval streets in Rome, with the beautiful Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (free entry). Dinner in a trattoria: pasta cacio e pepe or coda alla vaccinara for 12 to 18 euros per person, with a glass of local wine for 4 to 6 euros. No tourist menu card in sight? Then you are in the right place.
  • Saturday: the icons Early start: Colosseum ticket (18 euros, including the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill) booked in advance via ticketing.colosseo.it. Walk through the Forum and then along the Via Sacra to the Capitoline Hill. Lunch in Testaccio: the Testaccio Mercato Rionale is the best local market in Rome, with fresh bread, cheese and supplì (deep-fried rice balls) for 6 to 10 euros. Afternoon: Borghese Gallery (18 euros, time slot mandatory, maximum 360 visitors at once, always book in advance) for the finest Bernini sculptures and Caravaggio paintings. Evening: walk to the Trevi Fountain (free, go early morning or late at night for fewer crowds). Dinner in Prati, the neighbourhood north of the Vatican: better value than Centro Storico.
  • Sunday: Vatican and hidden Rome Vatican Museums opening time is 09:00. Online ticket costs 25 euros (including 5 euros booking fee). Sistine Chapel is included. Afterwards visit Piazza Navona and the Pantheon (7 euros, price rose from 5 to 7 euros on 1 July 2026, dress code: shoulders and knees covered). Finish with an espresso standing at the bar for 1 to 1.50 euros (Italian custom: sitting costs double). Then back to Fiumicino: Leonardo Express or Terravision bus, allow at least 90 minutes before your flight.

Insider tip: Quartiere Coppede

Almost every weekend tourist in Rome misses the Quartiere Coppede. Hidden between the boulevards near Piazza Buenos Aires (reachable by tram 3 or 19 from Termini) lies a complete Art Nouveau fantasy landscape: towers, arabesques, gargoyles, mosaics and wrought-iron lamps found nowhere else in Rome. No entrance fee, no queue, virtually no tourists. It is a free public square that completely surprises visitors. Combine this with the Giardino degli Aranci on the Aventine Hill: the best free panoramic view over Rome at sunset, with orange trees and almost no tourists, less well known than the Gianicolo.

What does a weekend in Rome cost?

Rome is not the cheapest weekend city but certainly not the most expensive if you choose wisely. Note the tourist tax of 3 to 7 euros per person per night on top of the hotel price. Food depends entirely on your choices: espresso at the bar 1 to 1.50 euros, pizza al taglio (slice of pizza) 3 to 6 euros, dinner in a local trattoria 15 to 20 euros per person. The 72-hour ATAC pass for 22 euros is the smartest transport choice for three days. Always book the Colosseum and Borghese Gallery in advance via the official websites; counter tickets are no longer available for the Colosseum.
