When is the best time to go?

April to June and September to October are ideal: 18 to 25 degrees and pleasant without the summer heat. Avoid July and August, hot and overcrowded. Carnival in February is magical but expensive, and November is acqua alta season with occasional high water on the squares. Note: in 2026 Venice charges a day-tripper access fee on 60 busy days (see below).

The day-tripper access fee (2026)

Since 2024 Venice has charged a contributo di accesso to day visitors on its busiest days. In 2026 it applies on 60 days between April and July, from 08:30 to 16:00, on weekends and public holidays. The fee is 5 euro if you book at least four days ahead, or 10 euro for a late booking; you get a QR code that is scanned at the stations and bus terminals. Good news: if you stay overnight in Venice you are exempt. So book a hotel in the city and you pay nothing extra, with the quiet, empty Venice to yourself in the evening.

The best neighbourhoods in Venice

  • San Marco The tourist heart with Piazza San Marco, the basilica and the Doge's Palace; beautiful but expensive to sleep in.
  • Cannaregio Authentic and affordable, with the oldest Jewish ghetto in the world and the best cicchetti bars along the Fondamenta della Misericordia.
  • Dorsoduro Students and art (Gallerie dell'Accademia, Peggy Guggenheim) and the lively Campo Santa Margherita for a spritz.
  • Castello The quietest sestiere, away from the crowds, with the Arsenale and the Biennale every two years.
  • Murano and Burano Islands in the lagoon for glassblowing (Murano) and the brightly coloured fishermen's houses (Burano), reachable by vaporetto.

Top 5 things to do in Venice

  • St Mark's Basilica The church itself is virtually free; a skip-the-line ticket costs from about 6 euro, and the Pala d'Oro and the Loggia dei Cavalli with the bronze horses cost a few euro extra.
  • Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale) The stunning palace with the Bridge of Sighs; entry 33 euro (youth and seniors 17.50 euro), book online.
  • Vaporetto along the Grand Canal Line 1 from start to finish, a single 9.50 euro (valid 75 minutes); more beautiful and cheaper than a gondola (from 90 euro).
  • Cicchetti tour in Cannaregio Small bites with an ombra (glass of wine) in baccaro bars, an evening together for about 15 to 20 euro.
  • Murano and Burano Day trip by vaporetto (single 9.50 euro or day pass 25 euro), with free glassblowing demos on Murano.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands

From Schiphol, KLM, easyJet and Transavia fly direct to Venice Marco Polo (VCE) in about 1 hour 50. A budget alternative is Ryanair to Treviso (TSF, 30 km), from where an ATVO bus runs to Piazzale Roma in 70 minutes (~12 euro). From Marco Polo the ATVO/ACTV bus takes you to Piazzale Roma in 20 minutes for 10 euro (18 euro return), or the Alilaguna water bus for about 15 euro in 75 minutes to San Marco. In the city only the vaporetto runs; a 25 euro day pass pays off from three rides.
