- Tram 28 The yellow tram through Alfama is free with a Lisboa Card. An on-board ticket costs €3.30; cheaper is the €1.90 Carris/metro one-hour ticket on a navegante card. Tip: board at the Martim Moniz terminus to get a seat, and go in spring or autumn for the shortest queues.
- Jerónimos Monastery + Monument of the Discoveries The Manueline monastery in Belém (€18, Lisboa Card: free) is Portugal's most famous monument. Walk 600m to the Monument of the Discoveries on the riverfront (€10, free viewing terrace always open) for the best views of the 25 de Abril bridge and the Tagus. Combine with a pastel de nata at Pastéis de Belém right next to the monastery.
- Sintra day trip Pena Palace (€17, book in advance) and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira (€10). The train from Rossio station takes 40 minutes and costs €5.10 return; go early as the palaces fill up fast.
- Museu Nacional do Azulejo Hidden gem: 700 years of Portuguese tile art in a former convent with a beautiful cloister. The panoramic blue-and-white tile panel of pre-earthquake Lisbon (1755) alone makes it worth the trip. Entry €11, free on Sundays before 14:00. Reachable by bus 794 or tram 28 (stop Xabregas).

Flights + transport from the Netherlands
Direct from Schiphol (AMS) to Lisbon Portela (LIS) in about 2 hours 50; TAP Portugal, KLM and Transavia fly daily. From Eindhoven you fly direct with Ryanair and Transavia in about 3 hours, together around 10 flights a week (June 2026).
Locally: metro and bus cost €1.90 per ride (Carris/metro one-hour ticket on a navegante card), a 24-hour pass €7.25. From the airport the metro takes you to the centre in just over 20 minutes.

How far is Lisbon airport from the city centre?

The most practical connection is metro line Vermelha (red) towards Saldanha or Marques de Pombal: 3 stops and about 15 minutes, costing 1.99 euros per trip. A taxi or Uber costs 10 to 18 euros depending on the time of day. The airport bus (Aerobus 1) runs to Marques de Pombal, Liberdade and Cais do Sodre for 4 euros. Get a Viva Viagem card at the machines in the arrivals hall: it works for the metro, bus and tram across the city.
