The Christmas Markets of Cologne: When and Where

Cologne is the only major Christmas market destination from the Netherlands that you can reach without flying: the ICE train stops right next to the Cathedral, walking distance from the biggest market. All six officially recognised markets are within 2 kilometres of the Hauptbahnhof, making it possible to visit all of them in a day.

• Dom Market (Roncalliplatz) - 16 November to 23 December 2026 Cologne's most famous Christmas market: 150 red stalls on Roncalliplatz with the Cathedral spires as backdrop. Open Sunday to Wednesday 11:00 to 21:00, Thursday and Friday until 22:00, Saturday from 10:00 to 22:00. Closed on 22 November (Totensonntag). Tip: visit after dark (after 17:00) for the full Christmas atmosphere.
• Angels Market (Neumarkt) - 16 November to 23 December 2026 Theme: angels and heavenly atmosphere, with 100+ decorated stalls at Neumarkt square. Opening hours: Sun-Thu 11:00-21:00, Fri-Sat 11:00-22:00, closed 22 November. Walking distance from the Dom market via the Schildergasse pedestrian zone (10 minutes).
• Heinzels Wintermarchen (Alter Markt/Heumarkt) - 23 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 The longest market in Cologne, named after the legendary elves who built the city at night. Includes an ice rink, daily from 11:00 to 22:00, closed 24 and 25 December. Alter Markt is the historic heart of the Altstadt; the atmosphere is slightly less polished than the Dom market but more authentic.
• Harbour Christmas Market (along the Rhine) - 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 The most unique market: maritime theme next to the Chocolate Museum, along the Rhine embankment. A 50-metre Ferris wheel, 70 artisan stalls, cider and mulled wine. Open Sun-Thu 11:00-21:00, Fri-Sat 11:00-22:00. Tip: combine a morning visit with the Chocolate Museum (12.50 euros on weekdays).
• Nikolausdorf (Rudolfplatz) - around mid-November to 23 December The most local market, in the trendy Belgisches Viertel neighbourhood, adjacent to Rudolfplatz. Half-timbered houses, fewer tourists, 80 stalls with artisan products. The exact opening date for 2026 is usually published in October; historically it opens around 16 to 23 November.
• Stadtgarten - around mid-November to just before Christmas Organic mulled wine, puppet theatre, fire-breathers and a more varied offering than the large markets. Located in a 19th-century city park, ideal for a quiet visit on a weekday afternoon.

How to Get from the Netherlands to Cologne

Cologne is the only major Christmas market destination you can reach by train without spending a night. There are no direct flights from Eindhoven, Rotterdam or Groningen to Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN). The train is faster and cheaper than a flight with a connection.

• From Amsterdam Central: direct ICE in 2 hours 38 minutes The ICE International (Deutsche Bahn) runs 7 times a day non-stop from Amsterdam Central via Utrecht and Arnhem to Cologne Hauptbahnhof. Price: from 20 euros (2nd class, 3 to 6 months in advance), averaging 30 to 40 euros when booking a month ahead. Book via NS International, Omio or Trainline.
• From Eindhoven: train via Venlo in about 1 hour 52 minutes Via Venlo (one change) you travel to Cologne Hauptbahnhof in about 1 hour 52 minutes. Price: from 19 euros. IC or ICE depending on the service. Book via NS International or Trainline.
• Arrival: Hauptbahnhof walking distance from the Dom market Cologne Hauptbahnhof is right next to the Cathedral. From the platform, you walk 3 minutes to the Dom market at Roncalliplatz. From there to the other markets: Neumarkt 10 minutes, Alter Markt 7 minutes, Harbour market (Chocolate Museum) 12 minutes on foot.

Budget and Practical Tips for Cologne

Cologne is more expensive than Prague or Gdansk, but cheaper than Vienna, Strasbourg or Brussels. Here is a realistic overview for a weekend:

• Public transport in Cologne (KVB) A single ticket (Einzelticket) costs 4 euros and is valid for 90 minutes. A day ticket (24-hour ticket) costs 9.60 euros. Most Christmas markets are within walking distance of Hauptbahnhof; metro lines 1, 7 and 9 connect the Dom and Neumarkt. The Harbour market and Chocolate Museum are a 12-minute walk from the station.
• Cologne Cathedral (12 euros from 1 July 2026) The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site right next to the Dom market. From 1 July 2026, entry officially costs 12 euros per adult (reduced 6 euros; children up to age 13 free). Those attending a service enter for free. The South Tower (views) and Treasury are separate tickets, combined 12 euros. Book in advance via the Cathedral website.
• Chocolate Museum (12.50 euros on weekdays) Next to the Harbour Christmas market, ideal to combine. Adults pay 12.50 euros on weekdays, 13.50 euros at weekends. Children (6-16 years) 7.50 euros on weekdays. Book online to avoid queues during the Christmas market season.
• Insider tip: walk the route in order Arrive at Hauptbahnhof, straight to the Dom market (3 min), then Neumarkt (10 min), Rudolfplatz in Belgisches Viertel (15 min walk, quieter), Alter Markt/Heumarkt (7 min back), Harbour market (12 min along the Rhine). An afternoon and evening is enough for all six markets.
• Avoid Totensonntag (22 November 2026) On Sunday 22 November, the Dom market and Angels market at Neumarkt are closed for the national day of remembrance. The Harbour market and Heinzels Wintermarchen are open as normal that day.
• Drink Kolsch around Alter Markt The traditional Cologne brewpubs (Brauerei) around Alter Markt and Heumarkt are part of the experience. A Kolsch (0.2 litre glass) costs around 2 to 3 euros. Well-known brewpubs include Brauerei Sion, Fruh and Peters Brauhaus.
