When and where is the Gdansk Christmas Market?

The Jarmark Bozonarodzeniowy is the official Christmas market of Gdansk and takes place every year from mid-November on the Targ Weglowy (Coal Market Square), right next to the Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia) in the historic centre. For 2026 the dates are confirmed: 20 November to 23 December 2026.

In addition to the main location on the Targ Weglowy, there are secondary locations on Tkacka Street, Bogusławskiego Street and the Forum Gdansk courtyard. The market is open Sunday to Thursday from 12:00 to 20:00 and Friday and Saturday until 21:00. Entry is free at all locations.

Forbes named the Gdansk Christmas market the best in Europe. Weekend evenings are busy; visit on a weekday afternoon or before 15:00 for a more relaxed atmosphere with the same festive feel.

Flights from the Netherlands to Gdansk

Wizz Air flies direct from Eindhoven (EIN) to Gdansk Lech Walesa (GDN), on average five times per week. Flight time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Return flights cost on average 80 to 120 euro per person during the Christmas market season (November and early December). Book at least six weeks in advance for the lowest price, as the cheapest seats sell out in September and October.

Connections from Amsterdam Schiphol are also available with a stopover. For a direct flight, Eindhoven is the right departure point. Flying out on a Friday morning and returning Sunday evening gives two full market days without an extra night in a hotel.

What to see and do at the Gdansk Christmas Market

The Jarmark Bozonarodzeniowy attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year with a mix of handmade products, food and entertainment. These are the highlights:

• Targ Weglowy and the Great Armoury The impressive Great Armoury (Wielka Zbrojownia) forms the backdrop of the market. Wooden stalls line up in rows in front of this historic facade, warmly lit from mid-afternoon onwards.
• Ice skating rink at the market A temporary ice rink is set up at the market location. Skate hire is available on site, ideal for an hour after browsing the stalls.
• Handmade amber stalls Gdansk is the world capital of amber. The Christmas market has dedicated amber stalls selling jewellery and figurines, partly handmade by local craftspeople. Always buy from a stall displaying a certificate of authenticity.
• Grzaniec galicyjski and pierogi The Polish equivalent of mulled wine is grzaniec galicyjski (warm spiced beer) or grzane wino (warm wine). A cup costs 3 to 5 euro. Pierogi (stuffed dumplings) average 5 to 7 euro for a plate. Polish sausage (kielbasa) and rye bread are also widely available.
• Reindeer parade and festive decor Children can enjoy the reindeer parade and entertainment attractions. The Christmas tree in the centre is always a highlight. For 2026 a Venetian carousel and light installations are also announced.

Budget for a Christmas market weekend in Gdansk

Gdansk is one of the most affordable Christmas market destinations from the Netherlands. Here is a realistic budget overview for two people (two nights, Friday to Sunday):

• Budget hotel Hotels in the historic centre cost 60 to 100 euro per night for a double room in December. Choose a hotel in the Glowne Miasto (historic city) for a 5 to 10 minute walk to the Targ Weglowy. Book early: December weekends fill up fast.
• Eating at the market and around town Pierogi 5-7 euro, dinner with beer in a restaurant 12-18 euro per person. Wrzeszcz and Stare Miasto neighbourhoods have cheaper eateries. The market itself is the most affordable for snacks and hot drinks.
• Getting around The PKM train from Gdansk Lech Walesa Airport takes 30 minutes to the city centre for around 3 euro. In the city, everything is walkable or a tram ride for 60 euro cents per trip.
• Total estimate A weekend for two people realistically costs 280 to 380 euro total, or 140 to 190 euro per person. That is cheaper than Prague, Vienna or Strasbourg.
