Prague Christmas markets: when and where

Prague has several Christmas markets scattered throughout the city, each with its own atmosphere. The two largest and most famous are on the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square. A forgotten gem is the market in the residential neighbourhood of Vinohrady. Entry to all markets is free.

• Staromestske Namesti (Old Town Square) - 28 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027 The most beautiful Christmas market in Europe: hundreds of wooden stalls around the Gothic Tyn Church and the astronomical clock, which performs a medieval puppet show every hour. Open daily from 10:00 to 22:00; on Christmas Eve until 14:00, on New Year's Eve until 03:00. Wait by the clock at 17:00 for the evening atmosphere, but expect crowds on weekend evenings.
• Wenceslas Square - 28 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027 The long boulevard through the New Town is the second major market, running at the same time as the Old Town Square. More focused on local visitors and less on tourists, with slightly lower stall prices. Connected to the Old Town Square via a 10-minute walk through Josefov (the Jewish quarter).
• Namesti Miru (Vinohrady) - 20 Nov to 24 Dec 2026 The market locals recommend: metro line A, stop Namesti Miru, two minutes walk. Open from 10:00 to 20:00. Almost exclusively Czech families, no tour groups, and prices clearly lower than on the Old Town Square. The trdelnik here costs 80 CZK compared to sometimes 200 CZK on the Staromestske Namesti.
• Republic Square and Kampa Island Smaller markets within walking distance of the Old Town Square. Republic Square is strong on food; Kampa Island has a charming little market along the Vltava with views of Charles Bridge, great for artisan products.

Flights from the Netherlands to Prague

From Amsterdam (Schiphol) KLM, easyJet and Ryanair fly direct to Prague (PRG, Vaclav Havel Airport). Flight time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Return flights in November and December 2026 average 150 to 200 euros per person when booked early.

From Eindhoven (EIN) Wizz Air and Transavia fly direct to Prague in approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. A return flight costs from approximately 100 euros per person; significantly cheaper than from Amsterdam. Eindhoven Airport is open in November and December 2026. Eindhoven does not close until 1 February 2027 for renovation, so all Christmas market weekends are accessible via Eindhoven.

Budget for a Christmas market weekend in Prague

Prague is one of the cheaper Christmas market destinations in Europe, especially compared to Vienna or Strasbourg. Here is a realistic overview for a weekend:

• Airport to city centre: cheapest route Take trolleybus 59 from the airport to Nadrazil Veleslavin station (metro line A), then the metro to the centre. A 90-minute ticket costs 50 CZK (approximately 2 euros). The journey takes approximately 45 to 55 minutes. The Airport Express bus runs directly to the Central Station for 200 CZK (approximately 8 euros). Avoid the illegal taxis at the airport exit; book via the Bolt app for approximately 400 to 600 CZK (16 to 24 euros).
• Food and drinks at the market On the Old Town Square, a svarak (mulled wine) costs 80 to 120 CZK (3 to 5 euros). A klobasa (grilled sausage with bread) is 80 to 150 CZK (3 to 6 euros). Trdelnik in the plain version costs 80 to 120 CZK; the filled version with ice cream or Nutella is 180 to 250 CZK and overpriced for what you get. At Namesti Miru, prices are 20 to 40 percent lower. Watch out at sausage stalls: ask the price beforehand, as they sometimes serve larger portions without asking.
• Public transport in Prague A 24-hour pass costs 120 CZK (approximately 5 euros) and covers metro, tram and bus. A 72-hour pass costs 330 CZK (approximately 13 euros). All Christmas markets are within walking distance of a metro or tram stop.
• Sights beyond the market Prague Castle is free from the outside; the Old Royal Palace costs 250 CZK (approximately 10 euros). Charles Bridge is always free. The Lobkowicz Palace costs 275 CZK. The Museum of Communism costs 390 CZK. Budget tip: walk across Charles Bridge early in the morning for minimal crowds and the best lighting conditions.
• Insider tip Visit Namesti Miru on a weekday evening after 17:00: quiet, authentically Prague, and you pay what Czech families pay instead of tourist prices.
