Frequently asked questions
When is the Dutch autumn break in 2026?
The 2026 autumn break runs from 10 to 18 October in the northern region and from 17 to 25 October in the central and southern regions. These are the advisory dates from the Dutch Ministry of Education; schools may deviate, so check the school guide.
Which school holiday region am I in?
The northern region covers roughly Groningen, Friesland, Drenthe, Overijssel, Flevoland and the north of Gelderland. The central region includes Utrecht, North Holland and parts of Gelderland and South Holland. The southern region covers Zeeland, North Brabant, Limburg and the south of Gelderland and South Holland. The official breakdown is published on rijksoverheid.nl.
Where is it still warm enough to swim during the autumn break?
Cyprus is the warmest option within five hours of flying, at 25 to 33 degrees with a sea that stays warm into October. Crete and Rhodes sit at 24 to 29 degrees, Malta at 22 to 28 degrees with sea temperatures around 24 degrees, and Hurghada at 25 to 30 degrees.
Is travelling during the autumn break more expensive?
Yes, demand peaks in those two weeks and that shows in flight and hotel prices. Two things genuinely help: if you live in the northern region you travel a week before the rest of the country, which is noticeably cheaper. And a destination outside the obvious top choices, such as Malta or Budapest, stays affordable even in the holiday weeks.
When is the best time to book for the autumn break?
For the autumn break, six to ten weeks ahead is usually the sweet spot. Leave it to the final weeks and the direct flights from Eindhoven and Schiphol on the popular days are the first to sell out.
