Best Time to Visit Istanbul
Best month: April (tulip festival, 18 to 22 degrees) or October (pleasant, low fares). Cheapest flights: November/January from 80 euros return. Visa: e-visa required, 60 USD, apply online. Avoid: July and August (35 degrees and huge crowds at the sights).
Istanbul is worth visiting all year, but the difference between the right and wrong month can add up to 150 euros on flights and 40 percent on hotels. April and October are the prime times: pleasant climate, no extremes and lower rates than the summer peak. Updated 23 September 2026.

January and February
The cheapest months outside the Christmas holidays: return from about 80 to 130 euros from Amsterdam. Temperatures 6 to 10 degrees during the day, rain and sometimes snow. Museums and sights are quiet. Ramadan falls partly in February in 2026 (late February to late March): special atmosphere but some restaurants closed during the day.
April and May
April is the best month: Istanbul Tulip Festival (all of April), the city literally blooms with millions of tulips in parks and along the Bosphorus. Temperatures 18 to 22 degrees, pleasant evenings. May is slightly warmer (22 to 25 degrees) but with less floral display. Return prices: 120 to 200 euros. Book hotels 6 to 8 weeks in advance.
June, July and August
Highest temperatures (30 to 38 degrees) but also the most discomfort: long queues at Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. Flights and hotels are 40 to 80 percent more expensive than in low season. One upside: long evenings, rooftop bars full of atmosphere, Bosphorus cruises at sunset.
September and October
September is the nicest late-summer month: still 28 degrees, clear skies and fewer crowds than August. October is the best autumn month: 20 degrees during the day, low flight prices (from 100 to 160 euros return). Perfect combination of pleasant climate and affordable prices. Autumn colours in the outer districts.
November and December
November is quiet and affordable: return from 90 to 140 euros, sights without queues. Grand Bazaar and Spice Market are a joy to explore without summer crowds. Temperatures 10 to 15 degrees.
December is atmospheric: the Galata bridges are lit up, the streets filled with festive decoration. The Christmas holiday (19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027) is busier but not as extreme as in European cities. New Year is popular but hotel rooms go quickly.
Flights from the Netherlands to Istanbul
From Amsterdam Schiphol: KLM and Turkish Airlines fly daily direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Istanbul Airport (IST) in about 3 hours 45 minutes. Turkish Airlines has the most frequent service and is often the cheapest airline. Return prices in low season from about 80 euros, high season 200 to 350 euros.
From Eindhoven: Ryanair flies from Eindhoven (EIN) to Istanbul (SAW - Sabiha Gokcen Airport, Asian side, about 30 km from the centre) and is sometimes the cheapest option. Note: SAW is further from the centre than IST; allow an extra 45 to 60 minutes for the transfer.
Visa: E-visa required for Dutch and EU citizens. Apply online at evisa.gov.tr, cost 60 USD (2026), takes about 10 minutes.
Best month by goal: sun, price or events?
- Best month for culture and sights October: pleasant climate, short queues at Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Basilica Cistern. Combine with a Bosphorus day trip.
- Best month for price and quiet visit November and January: lowest flight prices (from 80 euros return), few tourists. Note the Ramadan period (late February to late March 2026): special but quieter.
- Best month for events April (Istanbul Tulip Festival, all month): millions of tulips in city parks, free to admire. May: Istanbul Film Festival and Istanbul Music Festival.
- Best month for families April and May: pleasant climate, flower show free to see, Misir Carsisi (Spice Market) less crowded than in summer, Miniaturk park (all Turkish monuments in miniature, 6 euros).
- Best month for day trips April to October: day trips to the Princes' Islands (1 hour by boat), Bursa (2 hours by fast ferry), Ephesus (plane or bus) and the Dardanelles (Gallipoli, 3 hours).
School holidays and crowds: when to avoid?
The busiest periods in Istanbul for international travellers:
- Dutch autumn half-term: Region North 10 to 18 October 2026, Region Centre and South 17 to 25 October 2026. Istanbul slightly busier but certainly no peak.
- Dutch Christmas holidays: 19 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Istanbul is less popular than Rome or Barcelona at Christmas, so price increases are moderate.
- Ramadan 2026: approximately 18 February to 19 March 2026. Unique atmosphere in the evenings (iftar dinners, illuminated mosques), but daytime restaurants closed and extra crowds at popular locations. Not necessarily to avoid, but be prepared.
- Also avoid: July and August (too hot, too crowded). Turkish National Day (29 October): celebrations but some tourist sites closed or restricted.
