Best time to visit Porto
Porto is worth visiting all year round: the Atlantic climate keeps winters mild and summers pleasant. But the timing of your visit determines whether you pay 30 or 160 euros for your flight, and whether you experience the Ribeira in peace or need elbow room at the azulejo church. By season: when should you go?
January and February
Lowest prices of the year for flights (sometimes 30 to 55 euros return) and hotels (35 to 50% cheaper). The Atlantic climate keeps it mild: 8 to 14 degrees during the day, rainy but rarely cold. Museums, azulejo churches and port wine cellars are quiet. The Livraria Lello (bookshop) can be visited without a queue for the first time in years.
May and June (before Sao Joao)
May is the ideal month: 16 to 21 degrees, little rain, blooming jacaranda trees and flights still 20 to 30% cheaper than in summer. Early June is similar, but the Festa de Sao Joao weekend (23-24 June) draws the absolute maximum of visitors: impressive but also extremely busy and expensive, so book well ahead or choose around that weekend.
July and August
Peak season: Porto is at its busiest and most expensive. Temperatures 20 to 26 degrees, ideal for the beaches of Foz do Douro and Matosinhos. But the historic district is overcrowded, hotels are 40 to 60% more expensive and flights can cost 120 to 200 euros return. If you do go in summer: wake up early for Livraria Lello (before 10:00) and explore the less touristy Cedofeita neighbourhood.
September and October
September is still summery warm (18 to 24 degrees) but quieter than peak. October is the grape harvest in the Douro Valley, the most beautiful moment for a day trip to the wine region. Temperatures drop back to 14 to 20 degrees. Flights 20 to 35% cheaper than August. Less rain than November but more chance of rain than summer.
November and early December
November is one of the cheapest months: flights sometimes under 40 euros return, hotels heavily discounted. Porto in autumn has a special atmosphere: wet cobblestones, steaming pastel-coloured facades, perfect port wine evenings by a heater. Early December brings Christmas lights to the Rua de Santa Catarina and the city centre.
Note: Porto is not a big Christmas market city like Prague, so December is actually relatively cheap unless you go right during the Christmas holidays (24-31 December). That period is significantly more expensive.
Cheapest months for Porto: monthly price overview
Porto is one of the most accessible European city trips from the Netherlands. Ryanair flies direct from Eindhoven in approx. 2 hours 15 minutes; TAP and easyJet fly direct from Schiphol. Prices vary considerably by month:

The absolute cheapest time for a trip to Porto is January or February, followed by November and early December. If you want the mild climate but want to go cheaply, October is ideal: quiet city, grape harvest in the Douro Valley, pleasant temperatures and flights significantly cheaper than the summer peak.
Flights from the Netherlands to Porto
From Eindhoven: Ryanair flies direct from Eindhoven Airport (EIN) to Porto Francisco Sa Carneiro Airport (OPO) in approx. 2 hours 15 minutes. In the low season return fares can sometimes be found from approx. 20 to 35 euros per one-way (including carry-on).
From Amsterdam Schiphol: TAP Air Portugal and easyJet fly direct from Amsterdam Schiphol to Porto in approx. 2 hours 20 minutes. Always compare both airports: Eindhoven is sometimes 30 to 50% cheaper on the same dates, but Schiphol has more departure times and sometimes better arrival times.
Events and reasons to visit
- Festa de Sao Joao (23-24 June 2026) Porto's biggest and most iconic festival: the feast of Saint Joao Baptista (John the Baptist). The whole city takes to the streets for fireworks, grilled sardines, plastic hammers (which you can bop anyone on the head with), balloons and live music. The Ribeira and the Ponte Dom Luis I are the absolute epicentre. Tip: book your flight and hotel at least 2 to 3 months in advance as everything fills up and double the normal price is standard that weekend.
- NOS Primavera Sound (early June 2026) One of the best alternative/indie music festivals in Europe, held every year in Parque da Cidade (the largest city park in Portugal, beside the sea). International headliners, varied line-up, beautiful location. Three-day festival; check the official website for exact dates.
- Queima das Fitas (May) The student end-of-year celebration at the University of Porto: a week of festivities in the city centre, traditional music (fado-estudantina) and processions. Less known to foreign tourists, so actually an authentic reason to go in May.
- Christmas lights (December) Porto has atmospheric Christmas lighting on the shopping streets (Rua de Santa Catarina, Rua das Flores) and on the Avenida dos Aliados, but no big Christmas market like Brussels or Cologne. Ideal for those wanting atmosphere without the market crowds. Early and mid-December are pleasantly cheap.
- Douro harvest (September-October) Not a festival but one of the most beautiful experiences in the region: the grape harvest in the Douro Valley, approx. 100 km east of Porto. Visit quintas (wine farms) and watch the grape treading. Combine with a boat trip on the Douro. Private tours are sometimes cheap to book.
