Best time to visit Budapest
Budapest is a great destination year-round, but the timing of your visit determines whether you pay 50 or 200 euros for your flight and whether you soak in steaming thermal baths in the frost or catch the Sziget Festival. By season: when should you go?
January and February
Least crowded, coldest months (-2 to 5 degrees), chance of snow. Flights from approx. 50-70 euros return. Hotels 30-40% cheaper than in summer. The big advantage: the thermal baths (Szechenyi, Gellert) are spectacular in frost with steaming 36-degree outdoor pools. Barely any tourists on Vaci Street or the Castle.
May and September
May is the absolute highlight: pleasant weather (16-24 degrees), Budapest Spring Festival (March), rose gardens in bloom and no summer crowds yet. September is quieter after the Sziget peak, with golden autumn climate (15-23 degrees) and the Budapest Wine Festival on Castle Hill. Flight prices 20-30% below the summer peak.
July and August
High season due to the Sziget Festival (second and third week of August) and the F1 Grand Prix (late July). Temperatures 22-31 degrees. Hotels during Sziget week are sometimes 80-100% more expensive. Flights cost 130-220 euros return in 2026 during those weeks. Book at least 3 months ahead if you go in August.
March, April and October
Shoulder season with good value for money. March-April: 5-18 degrees, Budapest Spring Festival (classical music performed by Budapest Festival Orchestra). October: autumn climate (8-18 degrees), quieter after Sziget, wine festivals and the beautifully autumn-coloured Castle Hill promenade. Flight prices approx. 20% below summer.
November and early December
November is one of the cheapest months: flights sometimes under 55 euros return, hotels heavily discounted. Late November the Christmas markets start on Vorosmarty Square and at the Basilica, running until 1 January. A wonderfully atmospheric time to visit Budapest. Note: the second half of December (Christmas and New Year) is more expensive, with prices rising to 120-200 euros for flights.

Flights from the Netherlands to Budapest
From Eindhoven: Wizz Air flies direct from Eindhoven Airport (EIN) to Budapest (BUD) in approx. 1 hour 55 minutes, up to 13 flights per week. In low season, return prices can be found for under 50 euros per person including hand luggage. In high season you typically pay 100-160 euros.
From Schiphol: KLM, Ryanair and sometimes easyJet fly direct to Budapest. Always compare both airports: Wizz Air from Eindhoven is often the cheapest option in low season, but Schiphol offers more flexibility in departure times.
Events and reasons to go
- Budapest Spring Festival (March) One of Central Europe's most prestigious classical music and arts festivals, with concerts in the Vigado Concert Hall and the Opera House. Several weeks in March. A great reason to go in early spring.
- Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix (late July) The Grand Prix at the Hungaroring Circuit, approx. 20 km outside Budapest, attracts tens of thousands of fans every year. Hotels and flights that week are significantly more expensive; book at least 3 months ahead if you want to go.
- Sziget Festival (second and third week of August) One of Europe's largest and most popular music festivals on Obuda Island in the Danube. 5 to 7 days, with international headliners. Tickets cost hundreds of euros. Hotels nearby are 80-100% more expensive that week.
- National Day and fireworks (20 August) On Hungary's National Day, the St. Stephen's fireworks are launched over the Danube, one of the most spectacular in Europe. The city is extra busy but the atmosphere is extraordinary.
- Budapest Wine Festival on Castle Hill (September) Four days on Castle Hill with Hungary's best wines and gourmet food, in a beautiful historic setting. Typically runs the second week of September.
- Christmas markets (late November to 1 January) The markets on Vorosmarty Square and at the Basilica of St. Stephen are atmospheric and less touristy than those in Prague or Vienna. Best period: first two weeks of December before the crowd peak.
Budapest thermal baths: best time
Budapest's thermal bath culture is active year-round, but the most special experience is in winter. In frost or snow, bathers sit in steaming outdoor pools of 36-38 degrees while temperatures outside are below zero.
The Szechenyi Baths (yellow baroque building in City Park, Budapest's oldest thermal bath) and the Gellert Baths are the most famous. Entry prices: approx. HUF 5,000-7,000 (approx. 13-18 euros) for a day ticket. On Saturday evenings Szechenyi hosts Sparty events (parties in the baths, extra cost).
