When is the best time to go?

April to June and September to October are ideal for Vienna: pleasant 18 to 22 degrees, parks in bloom (Burggarten, Stadtpark) and a full events calendar. May is the best month: the Wiener Festwochen (music and theatre festival) runs the entire month, the Schonbrunn gardens are at their finest and there are fewer tourists than in the summer peak.

December is atmospheric: the Christkindlmarkt in front of the Rathaus is one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe (late November to 24 December), and there are also markets at Karlsplatz, Spittelberg and Schonbrunn.

Vienna in December: around 1 to 5 degrees, dry and wonderfully festive. Avoid July and August: 30 to 35 degrees and little air conditioning in historic buildings. January and February are cheap (flights 30 to 40% below the summer peak) but grey and sometimes cold.

Coffee house culture: the authentic Viennese experience

Vienna invented the European coffee house as a third place: UNESCO recognised Wiener Kaffeehauskultur in 2011 as an intangible cultural heritage. In a traditional Viennese coffee house you order a Melange (similar to a cappuccino, €4 to 5), an Einspanner (strong coffee with whipped cream in a glass, €4) or a Verlängerter (lengthened espresso).

You can sit for hours, read a newspaper (free at the counter) and nobody will ask you to leave. Orders are almost always taken by a Ober in a white shirt, not via an app.

The best coffee houses for the authentic experience: Café Central (Herrengasse 14, built in a former palace), Café Hawelka (Dorotheergasse, open since 1939, cash only), Café Landtmann (opposite the Rathaus, Freud's favourite café) and Café Sperl (Gumpendorfer Strasse, 6th district, most authentic and less touristy). Budget tip: a Melange with a slice of Apfelstrudel costs around €10, a full lunch including soup and main course around €14 to 18.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands

From Schiphol you fly to Vienna (VIE) in 1 hour 50 with KLM or Austrian Airlines; from Eindhoven, Ryanair flies direct twice a week in 1 hour 40. From the airport take the S-Bahn S7 (cheapest option) or the faster CAT train to the centre.

Note the new public transport fares since January 2026: a single ticket costs €3.20 (€3 online), the 24-hour ticket €10.20 and the weekly ticket €28.90; the 48- and 72-hour tickets have been discontinued.

For day trips to Salzburg (3 hours by train) or Hallstatt, renting a car is a good option: book via DiscoverCars at Vienna Airport, typically €35 to 55 per day.
