When is the best time to go?

May, June and September are ideal: 18 to 24 degrees, long days and terraces along the Vistula without the summer heat. July and August are warm (often 26 to 30 degrees) and busiest. December has the atmospheric Christmas market on the Old Town Square, but expect sub-zero temperatures and short days. For the cheapest flights, pick a weekend outside the Dutch school holidays; August is historically the cheapest month from Eindhoven.

The best areas in Warsaw

  • Stare Miasto (Old Town) UNESCO World Heritage rebuilt brick by brick after 1945. Castle Square with Sigismund's Column and the Market Square with the Mermaid (Syrenka) form the tourist heart.
  • Srodmiescie The real centre around the Palace of Culture and Science, with metro, shops and restaurants. The handiest base for a short trip.
  • Nowy Swiat & Krakowskie Przedmiescie The elegant avenue full of cafes, palaces and the university, running from the Old Town to the south. The city's nicest walking route.
  • Powisle A hip riverside district with the Copernicus Science Centre, the green University Library with its roof garden and beach bars along the Vistula.
  • Praga Across the river, largely spared in WW2: authentic pre-war facades, street art, the Neon Museum and the Koneser vodka distillery. The raw, real Warsaw.
