When is the best time to visit Nis?

May, June and September are ideal months for a trip to Nis: pleasant weather of 18 to 25 degrees Celsius, fewer tourists than the summer peak and lower hotel prices.

July and August are hotter (28-32 degrees) but also more vibrant: summer concerts and festivals take place at the Nis fortress, almost always for free. Avoid December to February: cold with possible snow, temperatures down to -4 degrees Celsius at night. April is the wettest month.

• Skull Tower (Cele Kula) One of the most unusual monuments in the world: an Ottoman commander in 1809 embedded the skulls of 952 fallen Serbian fighters as a deterrent. About 58 skulls have been preserved. Entry: 300 RSD (approx. €2.55). Not suitable for sensitive visitors, but historically unmissable.
• Niska Tvrdjava (Nis Fortress) Impressive Ottoman fortress (18th century) on the banks of the Nisava river with parks, galleries, kafanas and a summer stage. Entry free; open 24/7. The ideal spot for an evening stroll with free concerts in summer.
• Mediana Archaeological Park Late Roman imperial estate with over 1,000 m2 of preserved floor mosaics, built for Constantine the Great. Entry: 500 RSD (approx. €4.25). Nis bore the Roman name Naissus and is the birthplace of the first Christian Roman emperor.
• National Museum of Nis Exhibitions on the Roman heritage and Constantine the Great, with original finds from Mediana. Entry: 150-300 RSD (approx. €1.25-2.55). A perfect introduction before visiting Mediana itself.
• Kazandzijsko Sokace (Coppersmith Alley) Historic cobblestone alley from the Ottoman period, now Nis's most vibrant kafana and restaurant area. Entry free; pay only for food (cevapi from €2) and a local beer (€1-2).

Flights and transport from the Netherlands to Nis

There are no direct flights from the Netherlands to Nis Constantine the Great Airport (INI). The cheapest and most practical route goes via Belgrade (BEG). Wizz Air flies from Eindhoven (EIN) directly to Belgrade for often €26-60 per one-way ticket; Air Serbia flies from Schiphol (AMS) to Belgrade in approx. 2 hours.

From Belgrade, Nis-Ekspres buses run multiple times daily to Nis: the journey takes approx. 2.5 hours and costs approx. €10-15. Total travel time from the Netherlands: approx. 6-8 hours.

Alternative for those in the south of the Netherlands: bus or train to Dortmund or Basel, then Wizz Air direct to INI (check current schedules). In Nis, almost everything is within walking distance from the city centre. A city bus costs approx. €0.85; a taxi within the city approx. €1.70-3.40.

Insider tip: kafana terraces in the Roman ruins

Inside the Niska Tvrdjava (Nis fortress) are two small bar terraces nestled in 2,000-year-old Roman walls: locals drink a Jelen beer or rakija there in the evenings, completely free to visit (you only pay for the drinks). Go after sunset (9-10 pm in summer) for the best atmosphere.

This is in no travel guide. Combine with the nearby summer stage with free live music. Another tip: walk all the way to the end of Kazandzijsko Sokace, as the most authentic kafanas (including Kafana Kod Rajka) are hidden at the back, not at the touristy main entrance.

Nis is one of Europe's cheapest cities. Budget hotels: €10-20/night (hostel), €25-45/night (3-star hotel). Food: cevapi or pljeskavica at a local diner €2-4, lunch at a kafana €4-7, dinner €8-15. Sights rarely cost more than €4-5 (Skull Tower entry €2.55, Mediana €4.25, fortress free). Bus from Belgrade: approx. €10-15. For 5 days in Nis (flights via BEG, hotel, food, transport and sights) budget realistically €370-500 per person. Daily budget: €25-40 (budget) or €50-80 (comfort).
