When is the best time to go?

May, June, September and October are ideal: pleasant around 15 to 25 degrees and the terraces on Vitosha Boulevard are full. July and August are warm but fine, with the mountains for a cool escape nearby. Winter is grey but very cheap, and you can even ski on Vitosha mountain half an hour from the centre. Sofia sits at 550 metres, so evenings are often fresh: bring a jacket even in summer.

The best areas in Sofia

• Centre (Serdika) Around the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Sveta Nedelya square: most sights within walking distance and the best choice for a first visit.
• Vitosha Boulevard The car-free shopping street with mountain views, full of cafés, terraces and boutiques. Lively and central.
• Lozenets A green, hip district with specialty coffee, wine bars and good restaurants, just south of the centre.
• Studentski Grad The student quarter with the cheapest and liveliest nightlife in the city.
• Boyana A quiet villa district at the foot of Vitosha, with the famous Boyana Church and the start of mountain hikes.

Top 5 things to do in Sofia

• Alexander Nevsky Cathedral One of the largest Orthodox churches in the world with golden domes; the main church is free, the icon crypt in the basement costs approx. €4 (open Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00). The National Gallery and National Ethnographic Museum are nearby.
• St George Rotunda + Serdika A 4th-century Roman rotunda with early-Christian frescoes, hidden among government buildings. The excavated Roman streets of Serdica surround it in an open-air museum - all free.
• Boyana Church UNESCO World Heritage Site (open Apr-Oct 09:30-16:00, Nov-Mar 09:00-17:30): stunning 13th-century frescoes considered masterpieces of Byzantine art. Entry approx. €5-6, booking required, maximum 10 visitors at a time (unique in Europe: no other UNESCO site has such a strict cap, making the visit feel private). Combine with the National History Museum nearby (approx. €5, open 09:30-18:00).
• Vitosha mountain Hiking, mountain biking or skiing in winter, half an hour from the city centre. The mountain bus runs every hour. Park entry is free; ski day pass approx. €20-25.
• Free walking tour Daily at 11:00 from the Palace of Justice, tip-based: the best 2.5-hour introduction to Sofia’s Thracian, Byzantine and Ottoman history.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands

From Eindhoven you fly direct to Sofia (SOF) with Ryanair and Wizz Air in about 2 hours 40. From Schiphol, Wizz Air and Bulgaria Air fly direct in about 2 hours 50. Return from approx. €60 (EIN) or €90 (AMS) in the low season.

The airport is on metro line M4: a single ticket costs €0.80 and you reach the centre in about 20 minutes. New: on 14 August 2026 three new stations on metro line M3 opened, improving connections to the Borisova Gradina and Levski districts.

A taxi to the centre costs €9-15 on the meter; use the official rank outside arrivals. Bolt and Spark (ride-hailing) are cheaper at approx. €4-6. Sofia joined the eurozone on 1 January 2026, making it the first Balkan capital in the eurozone - no currency exchange needed.

Eating and drinking in Sofia

Sofia is remarkably cheap by Western European standards. A banitsa (savoury filo pastry) for breakfast costs €1-2, a lunch menu €5-8, dinner with wine €12-20. Good options:

• Manastirska Magernitsa Traditional monastery recipes in an authentic Bulgarian interior, city centre. Book ahead. Mains €8-15.
• Pod Lipite Almost a century old, own-farm produce, regional dishes. Rustic atmosphere outside the centre, about 30 minutes on foot.
• Hadjidraganov’s Houses Kavarma stews and shopska salad in authentic decor, near Vitosha Boulevard. Mid-range, €10-18.
• Sun Moon Vegetarian: homemade bread, Bulgarian spreads, soups. Popular with locals, €3-6 per dish.

Insider tip: drink free warm mineral water at the public fountains next to the Central Mineral Baths on Georgi Rakovski Street, and try a shot of rakija with shopska salad in any kafana.

At Banski Square, three free-to-visit highlights are within a short walk: the Banya Bashi Mosque (free, open outside prayer times approx. 09:00-19:00, modest dress required), the Sofia History Museum in the colourful former bathhouse building (approx. €3, Tue-Sun 10:00-18:00) and the excavated Roman ruins of Serdica which you can view for free from street level.
