Your weekend plan, day by day

  • Friday: arrival and first evening Fly Friday evening or morning from Eindhoven Airport to Vienna in 1 hour 40 minutes (flights on Wednesday and Saturday). Take the S7 or ÖBB Railjet for 4.40 euros to Wien Mitte or the Hauptbahnhof, 15 to 33 minutes. First stop: a Viennese coffee house for Melange and Apfelstrudel (expect 5 to 10 euros). Dinner in a Beisl in the 7th district Neubau: Wiener Schnitzel with potato salad (around 15 to 22 euros per person). A walk along the illuminated Ringstrasse closes the day.
  • Saturday: imperial and local Early to Schonbrunn Palace (State Apartments for 30 euros per person, book online to avoid queues). Walk through the palace gardens to the Gloriette for the panorama over Vienna, free. Lunch at the Naschmarkt (nearly 600 metres of fresh markets and food stalls in the 4th district; 8 to 15 euros per person). Afternoon: Upper Belvedere (23 euros) for Klimt's "The Kiss" and a phenomenal view. Evening: buy Staatsoper standing tickets at the day-of ticket counter: Parterre 18 euros, balcony 13 to 15 euros. World-class opera for a fraction of the price.
  • Sunday: Prater and hidden Vienna Morning in the Prater park (free), optionally the Giant Ferris Wheel Riesenrad (14.50 euros, 15 minutes, stunning panorama). Lunch in Leopoldstadt at the Karmelitermarkt. For the culture lover: Kunsthistorisches Museum (22 euros, one of the world's richest art collections). Afternoon: take bus 38A to Grinzing or Neustift am Walde for a glass of Gruner Veltliner at a Heuriger wine tavern, straight from the producer (10 to 15 euros for a few glasses and a plate). Then back to the centre and to the airport (S7, around 30 to 45 minutes before your flight home).

Insider tip: Heuriger in Döbling

Vienna is the only European capital with working vineyards within the city limits. In the neighbourhoods of Grinzing, Neustift am Walde and Nussberg in the 19th district of Döbling you will find Heuriger: traditional wine taverns run by the producer themselves. You can recognise an open Heuriger by a pine branch (Buschen) above the door. Here the farmer serves his own new Gruner Veltliner or Riesling, and you eat Liptauer cheese spread, dark bread and smoked meats from a buffet. Reachable by tram D to Heiligenstadt, then bus 38A. An evening here costs you 10 to 15 euros and you sit next to the residents of Dobling, not other tourists. Wieninger am Nussberg and Mayer am Pfarrplatz (Beethoven once lived there) are two well-regarded locations.
