- Friday: arrival and Prokurative in the evening Land at Split Airport (SPU), roughly 25 km west of the city. Take the airport bus (line 37) to the bus station for about €5; a taxi costs €25-35. In the evening, Prokurative (Republic Square), the neoclassical square next to the palace, is the best starting point: terraces, live music and locals strolling. Dinner in Veli Varos for €15-22 per person.
- Saturday: Diocletian's Palace, Marjan Hill and Bacvice Early morning into Diocletian's Palace: a 4th-century Roman imperial palace (1,700 years old, free to enter) that has been inhabited for centuries. Walk the narrow alleys, visit the Peristyle courtyard and the cathedral (campanile climb approx €5). In the afternoon, walk along the seafront promenade to Marjan Hill, the forested peninsula with views over all of Split and the islands. Descend to Bacvice: the city beach with local picigin players. Insider tip: Meje and Bacvice in the evening
Two insider tricks for Split: (1) Walk through the Meje district early on Sunday morning, the quiet villa neighbourhood west of Marjan. Swim at the rock platform of Jezinac Beach (free, almost no visitors) with views of Solta and Brac. (2) Go to Bacvice Beach after 18:00 rather than midday: the sun is lower, the water is still warm and the locals are playing picigin, a traditional ball game in shallow water played nowhere else in the world.
