When is the best time to visit?

October to early April is the northern lights season: the location above the Arctic Circle ensures dark nights that make the aurora visible. November and December are the most popular months with a 60 to 80 per cent chance. Travellers on a budget choose October or March: prices are 25 to 30 per cent lower than December with a still-good chance of seeing the lights. From 20 May to 22 July the midnight sun shines 24 hours a day, ideal for hiking and kayaking.

Flights and transport from the Netherlands

easyJet flies direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Tromsø (TOS) in approximately 3 hours 15 minutes; Transavia is expected to open this route in October 2026. Return tickets from approximately 145 euros (early bird, easyJet). From Eindhoven there is no direct flight; travellers drive to Schiphol or take a connecting flight via Oslo. From the airport (6 km from the centre), the Flybussen (approx. 11 euros) or city bus route 40 (approx. 4.50 euros via the app) connect to the city centre. An organised northern lights tour with a group bus costs an additional 106 to 132 euros.
