When is the best time to go?
Late April and early May are ideal for visiting Lille: pleasant spring weather, blooming parks and significantly fewer tourists than in summer. The first weekend of September is the Braderie de Lille (in 2026: 5 and 6 September), Europe's largest flea market with more than two million visitors, but hotels are then expensive and scarce. December is cosy with the traditional Christmas market on the Grand Place. Summer (June-August) is pleasant but busier.

Transport from the Netherlands to Lille
The train is by far the most convenient connection from the Netherlands. The Eurostar departs from Amsterdam Centraal or Rotterdam Centraal and travels via Brussels to Lille-Europe: Rotterdam-Lille in around 55 to 65 minutes, Amsterdam-Lille in around 1 hour 15 to 30 minutes. Return tickets are available via Trainline or NS International for around 85 to 120 euros per person, or from 42 euros one way when booked in advance. There are no direct flights from the Netherlands to Lille (LIL), and none are needed: the distance is too short for a worthwhile flight. Within Lille, travel by metro (Ilevia): 1.80 euros per trip, day pass 4.65 to 5.30 euros. Roubaix and Tourcoing are also reachable by metro.
