When is the best time to visit?

September and October are the best months: sea water still genuinely warm (20 to 24 degrees, comparable to the Costa del Sol), ideal temperatures (23 to 28 degrees) and prices 30 to 50 percent lower than peak summer.

May and early June are also excellent: quiet beaches, comfortable temperatures and swimmable water. Avoid July and August: Nador is a popular destination for the Moroccan diaspora community, hotels need to be booked 6 to 8 weeks ahead and beaches are packed.

Best neighbourhoods in Nador

• City Centre The commercial hub with markets, banks, restaurants and transport connections. Most budget hotels are here.
• Corniche (seafront promenade) The social and visual heart of Nador: a boulevard along the Marchica lagoon lined with cafes and terraces. From 9 PM to midnight in summer, the whole of Nador comes here for the evening paseo.
• Marchica Med Zone Modern waterfront district along the northern lagoon shore: marina, yacht club and new promenades. Quietest and most resort-like, 10 minutes from the centre.
• Beni Ensar Border town 13 km to the east: own fishing port, fresh seafood restaurants and the crossing to the Spanish enclave of Melilla. Unique frontier atmosphere.

• Marchica Lagoon Morocco's largest coastal lagoon (115 sq km, Ramsar wetland): kayaking, paddleboarding and birdwatching with flamingos. Free access; water sports hire approx. €9 to €18 per hour. Calm water, no waves, ideal for families.
• Mount Gurugu (887 m) An extinct volcano 8 km east of Nador, covered in pine forest. Wild Barbary macaques live here in their natural habitat, plus a 360-degree panorama over the lagoon, city and on clear days the Sierra Nevada in Spain. Free; taxi to the trailhead approx. €3 to €4. Round trip approx. 2 to 3 hours hiking.
• Cap des Trois Fourches (Cape of Three Forks) The most spectacular and least-visited coastal landscape in Morocco: a wild 20-km peninsula jutting into the Mediterranean, with a 1909 lighthouse and secret coves with crystal-clear swimming spots. 30 km west of Nador; hire a grand taxi approx. €28 to €46 for the car (share to split cost). Free entry.
• Melilla day trip (Spanish enclave) Unique in Africa: a Spanish city on Moroccan soil, EU territory with tapas bars, Art Nouveau architecture (the highest concentration outside Catalonia) and a 16th-century citadel. Taxi Nador to the border approx. €1 to €1.40, then walk across. Total day trip cost from Nador: under €5. Bring your EU passport.
• Souk Oulad Mimoun and Kisaria district The real weekly market serves the local population, not tourists: no polished tourist souks. Fresh market with Mediterranean fish from approx. €2.80/kg. The Kisaria district is the gold and silver quarter with traditional Riffian Amazigh silverwork. Free to browse.

Flights and transport from the Netherlands

Air Arabia Maroc flies several times a week direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Nador (NDR) in approx. 2 hrs 10 min to 3 hrs 10 min. Return from approx. €216 off-peak, from approx. €233 in summer. TUI Fly Belgium flies 3 times a week direct from Eindhoven (EIN) to Nador in approx. 3 hrs 30 min, return from approx. €130 to €200 off-peak.

The airport (NDR, 26 km from the city centre) is only accessible by grand taxi: approx. €18 to €23 for the car (share to save). City transport: small red petit taxis for €0.50 to €1.40 per ride.
