March to May and September to November are the best periods for a city trip to Marrakech: 22 to 28 degrees, perfect temperatures for the souks and day trips to the Atlas mountains. March is the most colourful month: almond blossom in the Atlas valley and the city is not yet full of summer tourists.
Avoid July and August: 38 to 42 degrees and the medina becomes an oven. December to February is mild during the day (14 to 18 degrees) but cold at night (sometimes below zero in the riad lanes), ideal for hammam wellness and a city trip without the crowds.
The Jardin Majorelle is beautiful in all seasons but least busy on weekday mornings at 9:00 (just after opening). Flights are 20 to 35% cheaper in January, February and November than in the peak months of April to May and October.
Practical tips for the souks and Jemaa el-Fnaa
The souks of Marrakech are divided by speciality: Souk Semmarine (textiles and clothing), Souk Cherratine (leather), Souk des Teinturiers (dyers, you can see the large colourful vats on the rooftops), Souk Haddadine (blacksmiths and copperware).
Take a guide for the first walkthrough: €25 to 40 for two hours, and avoid "voluntary" guides who approach you at the Djemaa el-Fnaa and steer you into unwanted shops.
Bargaining is expected for textiles, jewellery and leather goods: start at 30 to 40% of the asking price. Food products (spices, olives, nuts) generally have a fixed price. The Jemaa el-Fnaa is most impressive in the evening (19:00 to 23:00): hundreds of stalls with tagine, couscous, escargots (snails, a local delicacy, €2) and grilled meat.
Good hygiene at the stalls: take freshly opened items and avoid ice cream and fruit juice of unclear origin. Rooftop restaurants surrounding the square (Terrace Argana, Terrace des Epices) offer the best views for around €10 to 15 per person.
The best neighborhoods in Marrakech
- Medina (Historic heart) The old walled centre with the souks, palaces and the most riads. Stay here if you want to walk back after midnight without needing a taxi: everything is within walking distance. Choose a riad on the edge of the medina (towards Jardin Majorelle or Bab Doukkala) for slightly less noise at night.
- Gueliz (Ville Nouvelle) The modern centre from the French colonial period, with European brasseries, design boutiques (Mohammed V boulevard) and local coffee bars. More affordable than the medina, better public transport and a pleasant 20-minute walk or bus ride (no. 1) to the Djemaa el-Fnaa. Good for repeat visitors who want to avoid the medina crowds.
- Hivernage Luxury neighbourhood with grand hotels (Sofitel, Mamounia) and clubs, near the Menara gardens. Purely for those seeking an upscale stay; less authentic but excellent pool hotels for a summer holiday.
- Sidi Ghanem Industrial-chic, 10 minutes by taxi from the centre. Studios of local ceramicists, furniture makers and the Marrakech Design Week venues. Ideal for shoppers who don't want to buy the same Berber rug as everyone else in the souks, but want original, direct-from-maker purchases.
- Palmeraie A palm oasis northeast of the city with luxury resorts and eco-lodges. Option to ride camels at sunset (around €15 for an hour). Suitable for families wanting a resort experience with day trips into the medina.
