When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The dry season from November through April is ideal for the Maldives: clear blue skies, calm water and temperatures of 28 to 32 degrees. The monsoon runs from May to October with more rain, but also significantly lower prices for flights and accommodation. Particularly: June to November is actually the best season for spotting manta rays and whale sharks, which seek out the nutrient-rich monsoon waters.

Male: what to see and do

• Old Friday Mosque (Hukuru Miskiy, 1658) The oldest mosque in the Maldives, built from coral stone in 1658 under Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar I. The interior is beautifully carved with calligraphy and floral decorations. Free entry, but respect dress code; on the UNESCO tentative list.
• Sultan Park and National Museum The only surviving building of the former sultan's palace now houses the National Museum with Maldivian historical artefacts. Sultan Park is a peaceful green oasis in the city. Museum entry USD 3 or RF 38. Open Sat-Thu 9:00-17:00.
• Male Fish Market The bustling fish market on the quayside is busiest in the morning. In the afternoon, large stingrays gather at the waterfront for scraps: a free and impressive spectacle.
• Whale Submarine A submarine that dives up to 30 metres deep for a view of the coral reef and fish without getting wet. Ideal for non-divers. Book via whalesubmarine.com.mv.
• Hulhumale Beach The cleanest beach near Male, reachable via the Sinamale Bridge (free walking) or by bus. White sand, calm water and bikini-friendly beach (Maldivian law allows bikini beaches only at designated spots).

Island hopping from Male

Male is a compact city of only 5.8 km2 with few beaches. But the real Maldivian experience lies on nearby islands:

• Maafushi The most popular local island for budget travellers: guesthouses from 45-50 euros per night, snorkel tours, dive schools and a designated bikini beach. Reachable by public ferry (USD 3-5, 90 min) or speedboat (USD 35, 30 min).
• Victory Shipwreck One of the best wreck diving sites in the Indian Ocean, just 10 minutes by boat from Male. The cargo ship sank in 1981 and now lies at 30-35 metres depth. Dive trip including equipment from USD 100.
• Snorkelling in the lagoon Day trips from Male or Maafushi to snorkelling sites with manta rays, turtles and colourful fish. Prices from USD 50 including guide and equipment.

Flights from the Netherlands to Male

From Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Male Velana International Airport (MLE) there are no direct flights. The most popular routes:

• Via Doha: Qatar Airways, daily connections, approx. 13-14 hours total.
• Via Istanbul: Turkish Airlines, up to 26 connections per week, approx. 14-16 hours total.
• Via Abu Dhabi: Etihad Airways, cheapest regular option (sometimes from USD 707 return), approx. 13-15 hours.
• Via Vienna: Austrian Airlines sometimes offers the fastest connection, approx. 11 hours 30.

From Eindhoven (EIN): no direct connection; fly from Schiphol. Cheapest month to book: September for flights later in the year. Cheapest booking day: Tuesday or Wednesday, at least 6 weeks in advance.

Transfer from airport to Male centre: public ferry every 15 minutes from 5:00 to midnight, USD 2-5, 10 minutes. Taxi via the bridge: USD 7. To Maafushi: speedboat USD 35 (30 min) or public boat USD 3-5 (90 min).

Visa and practical information

Dutch citizens receive a free visa on arrival in the Maldives, valid for 30 days. You only need a valid passport (min. 6 months validity), a return ticket and proof of accommodation. No prior application required.

Note: alcohol is prohibited on inhabited islands and Male; it is only available at resorts on uninhabited tourist islands. Bikinis are only permitted on designated beaches (bikini beach on Maafushi and resort islands).

What does a trip to the Maldives cost?

Guesthouses on Maafushi cost from 45-50 euros per night. A local meal (fish and rice) costs USD 5-15. Daily budget for Male/Maafushi: approximately USD 75-130 including meals, a snorkel trip and transport. A 10-day trip including flights from the Netherlands realistically costs approximately 2,000 to 3,000 euros per person. Note: the Maldives are not cheap by definition, but local islands (guesthouses, not resorts) are the most budget-friendly option.
