When is the best time to visit Colombo?
The dry season from December through March is ideal for Colombo: temperatures of 27 to 32 degrees, minimal rain and clear skies for views from the Lotus Tower.
The main monsoon (May to August) brings heavy rain but also the lowest flight prices. October and November are shoulder season: the short monsoon has cleared and the city is less crowded. Book for the dry season at least 8 weeks in advance.
Best neighbourhoods in Colombo
- Fort (Col 1) The colonial heart of the city with the railway station, banks and the impressive Town Hall. Historic architecture alongside modern office buildings.
- Pettah (Col 11) The busy bazaar district right next to Fort: narrow streets full of textiles, spices and electronics. The Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque with its red-and-white facade is an iconic photo stop.
- Slave Island and Beira Lake (Col 2) Around the lake sits the Gangaramaya Temple, one of the most beautiful in the city. On Friday evenings there is a floating market here.
- Cinnamon Gardens (Col 7) The green, residential heart of Colombo: wide boulevards, the National Museum, Viharamahadevi Park and the best restaurants.
- Galle Face and Kollupitiya (Col 3) The Galle Face Green promenade along the sea for sunset and local snacks. The best hotels and shops are nearby.

- Gangaramaya Temple One of the most colourful and eclectic temples in Sri Lanka, built on the shores of Beira Lake. Entry approx. LKR 300-400 (about 0.85-1.10 euros). On Friday evenings there is a floating market on the lake.
- Lotus Tower The spectacular 350-metre-high telecommunications tower offers a panoramic view over all of Colombo and the coastline. Entry for foreigners: USD 20. Especially photogenic at sunset.
- National Museum of Colombo Sri Lanka's largest museum in Cinnamon Gardens displays 3,000 years of Ceylonese civilisation: masks, throne rooms and rare artefacts. Open Sat-Thu 9:00-17:00, entry LKR 500 (approx. 1.35 euros).
- Galle Face Green The famous promenade along the Indian Ocean where Colombo gathers every evening for street food and sunsets. Free entry, fried crab cakes for 50 cents.
- Pettah Market and Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque The bazaar district with its iconic red-and-white mosque (built 1908) is the most vibrant part of the city. Bargain for spices and textiles, try a kottu roti from the street for LKR 200-400.
Flights and transport from the Netherlands to Colombo
There are no direct flights from the Netherlands to Colombo Bandaranaike Airport (CMB). The most common routes from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS):
- Via Dubai Emirates flies several times daily AMS-DXB-CMB. Total travel time approx. 13-15 hours. SriLankan Airlines also flies via Dubai.
- Via Istanbul Turkish Airlines flies daily AMS-IST-CMB. Total travel time approx. 14-16 hours. Popular option due to low fares.
- Via Frankfurt Lufthansa/SriLankan sometimes via FRA-CMB; or combine KLM outbound with Air India return via Delhi for a better price.
From Eindhoven (EIN) there is no direct connection; take the bus or train to Schiphol (approx. 1 hour 30 min) and fly from there. Return ticket costs 550 to 800 euros in low season, 900 to 1,400 euros in high season (Christmas/summer). Cheapest booking day: Tuesday or Thursday, at least 7 weeks in advance.
From the airport to the city: bus 187 departs from arrivals towards Pettah for LKR 290 (approx. 0.85 euros), travel time approx. 50-60 minutes. The PickMe app is the most reliable taxi option in Sri Lanka; typical airport-to-centre fare approx. LKR 3,000-5,000 (8-14 euros).

Dutch citizens need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) for Sri Lanka. Good news: since 25 May 2026 the ETA is free for Dutch passport holders. Apply online at eta.gov.lk.
Requirements: valid passport (min. 6 months), return ticket, proof of accommodation. Approval takes 24 to 72 hours. The ETA is valid for 30 days with double-entry option. Never apply via third parties: the official site is free.
