✈️ Plan your trip to Lesbos →When is the best time to go?
May, June and September are ideal for Lesbos: temperatures of 23 to 28 degrees, warm sea water and a fraction of the August crowds. In May wildflowers still bloom on the hillsides. September combines warmth, quiet beaches and good prices. August is the busiest and most expensive, but also warmest for swimming. Spring (April) is wonderful for birdwatchers: Lesbos is one of Europe's best birdwatching locations thanks to its position on the migration route.
The best places on Lesbos
- Mytilene The lively capital on the double harbour: Byzantine castle, great terraces and the best ouzo shops. Good as arrival port and base for the south.
- Molyvos / Mithymna The most beautiful village on the island: cobblestone streets, colourful houses and a Genoese castle above the pebble bay. Popular, but retains its charm.
- Petra Quiet coastal village 5 km from Molyvos with a Blue Flag beach and a church perched on a freestanding rock. Less touristy than Molyvos.
- Skala Eresou Birthplace of the poet Sappho on the west coast, with a long black sand beach and a relaxed hippie atmosphere. Annual international women's festival in September.
- Sigri Remote western tip with calm bays and the best access to the Petrified Forest. Ideal for those seeking peace and quiet.
Top 5 attractions on Lesbos
- Petrified Forest of Sigri UNESCO Geopark with 20-million-year-old petrified trees. Combination ticket for museum and forest walking routes: €10. The thickest standing petrified tree in the world (circumference 13.7 m) is here.
- Taxiarchos Monastery (Mantamados) Active pilgrimage monastery from 1700, free entry. Famous bas-relief icon of Archangel Michael and authentic monastery atmosphere, 36 km from Mytilene.
- Castle of Molyvos Byzantine-Genoese castle with panoramic views over the Aegean Sea towards Turkey. Entry: €3. Open-air theatre performances in summer.
- Theophilos Museum (Varia) Museum dedicated to self-taught folk painter Theophilos (1867-1934) with 86 paintings. Entry: €3. Combine with the nearby Teriade Museum (also €3) featuring Picasso and Matisse.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands
TUI Fly, Corendon Airlines and Transavia fly seasonally direct from Amsterdam (AMS) to Lesbos (MJT, Mytilene Airport "Odysseas Elytis") in approximately 3 hours 15. From Eindhoven a connection is needed, usually via Athens. Book early for the best fares; direct flights are popular and sell out quickly in summer. On the island itself a rental car is almost essential: the KTEL bus network serves most villages but has limited frequency, especially at weekends. Budget €30 to 45 per day outside August.
What does a holiday on Lesbos cost?
Pensions and guesthouses start from €35 per night (2 people), mid-range hotels €60 to 90, boutique hotels €100 to 180. Food is affordable: gyros €3 to 5, dinner for 2 with ouzo €30 to 45. For a week (7 nights, flight, accommodation and food) budget realistically €550 to 900 per person depending on season.
