When is the best time to go?

May to September is the most pleasant period in Glasgow: temperatures of 15 to 20 degrees, long evenings, all attractions open and the best of the festival calendar. The Glasgow Jazz Festival takes place in June, and Celtic Connections (the world's largest Celtic music festival) in January is legendary. Important note for 2026: avoid 23 July to 2 August if you want normal prices, as the Commonwealth Games are held in Glasgow and hotel rates will be significantly higher. November and December are cosy for Christmas markets but expect regular rain.

The best neighbourhoods in Glasgow

• Merchant City The former warehouse district east of George Square is now full of bars, restaurants and boutiques, with the Gallery of Modern Art (free) as its centrepiece. Very walkable and compact, ideal as a base.
• West End The most atmospheric part of Glasgow: Kelvingrove Park, the University of Glasgow campus, Byres Road with independent coffee shops, the Botanic Gardens (free) and Kelvingrove Museum within walking distance.
• Finnieston Glasgow's hippest neighbourhood, on Argyle Street along the Clyde. Independent restaurants, craft beer bars and whisky shops, all within a few streets. The Riverside Museum is right on the water here.
• Southside Authentic Glasgow neighbourhood around Queen's Park and Pollok Country Park where the Burrell Collection is located. Fewer tourists, good local pubs and a relaxed vibe.
• East End The original Glasgow, around Glasgow Cross, the Barras market (weekends) and the Sharmanka Kinetic Theatre. More raw and real than the tourist areas.

• Glasgow Cathedral (free) The only Scottish mainland cathedral to survive the Reformation intact. A genuine 12th-century Gothic building in the heart of the city. Combine with a walk through the Necropolis (Victorian garden cemetery) directly behind it for skyline views.
• Glasgow Science Centre (£15.50) Interactive science museum on the south bank of the Clyde, ideal for families. The Glasgow Tower (£4.50 extra) is the tallest freestanding structure in Scotland with 360-degree views. Concessions £14, children £12.
• Riverside Museum of Transport (free) Scotland's Museum of the Year award winner: 3,000 objects on Glasgow's transport and technology history, including vintage trams, cars and ships. Directly on the Clyde with the historic tall ship Glenlee moored outside.

Flights and transport from the Netherlands

easyJet and KLM both operate direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Glasgow Airport (GLA), flight time approximately 1 hour 30, returns available from around €70. There are no direct flights from Eindhoven to Glasgow; Schiphol is the obvious choice. From the airport, bus 77 runs to Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre in about 25 minutes for £3. A taxi to the centre costs around £25 to 35. Glasgow Prestwick Airport (used by some Ryanair routes) is 50 kilometres from the city; allow 45 minutes and £12 by train.

Hostels (2026) start at £18 to £25 per night in a dorm. Budget hotels in low season start from £55 per night, high season (July-August) can reach £120 and above. Insider tip: Finnieston on a Friday evening

Head to Finnieston on Argyle Street on a Friday evening. This former industrial neighbourhood is now Glasgow's hippest dining and bar strip: independent restaurants ranging from Lebanese to Scottish-Japanese, craft beer bars like Drygate and Ride, and specialist whisky shops like Whisky Loft. Combine it with a daytime visit to the Riverside Museum on the Clyde and end the evening at a live music venue on Sauchiehall Street. For Sunday morning: the Barras market in the East End is an authentic Glasgow experience.
