When is the best time to go?

May, June and September are the best months: 15 to 19 degrees, long daylight hours and reasonable prices. In August the city bursts at the seams during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe (7 to 31 August 2026), the largest arts festival in the world; brilliant if you come for it, but busy and expensive if you would rather avoid the crowds. Winter is dark and raw, yet atmospheric around Christmas and Hogmanay. Always pack layers and a windbreaker, because the wind makes it colder here than the thermometer suggests.

The best areas in Edinburgh

  • Old Town The medieval core around the Royal Mile, full of atmosphere and a stone’s throw from the castle; the most central base for a short trip.
  • New Town The Georgian quarter with broad streets, Princes Street and the best shops, easy to walk and a little quieter.
  • Stockbridge A village within the city with cafes, a Sunday market and walking paths along the Water of Leith.
  • Leith The old port district, now one of the hippest corners with Michelin restaurants and a lively arts scene.
  • Dean Village and West End Picturesque quays and the prettiest photo spots, yet within walking distance of the centre.

Top 5 things to do in Edinburgh
