Route overview (3 months)
Bangkok → Chiang Mai → Pai → Luang Prabang → Vientiane → Hanoi → Halong Bay → Hoi An → Saigon → Phnom Penh → Siem Reap → back to Bangkok. Or split: 6 weeks Thailand+Laos, 6 weeks Vietnam+Cambodia.
Cheapest months
May to September is rainy season but still cheap. November-February is high season (best weather, 30-40% more expensive).
Daily budget
€20-€35/day all-in. Dorm bed €5-€8, street food €1-€3, beer €1-€2, bus €5-€15, attraction €3-€10. Cambodia is the cheapest, Singapore the most expensive.
Visa quick guide
Thailand: 30 days visa-free. Vietnam: e-visa €25 in 3 days. Cambodia: visa on arrival €25. Laos: visa on arrival €30. Malaysia: 90 days visa-free.
Vaccinations
Hepatitis A+B, typhoid, tetanus. DTP for jungle. Rabies if you'll handle animals. Get them 6 weeks before departure at GGD.
Backpacker gear
Backpack 50-65L (not bigger), dry bag for valuables, plug adapter, head lamp, microfiber towel, water filter LifeStraw. Total: €400.
Safety
Don't carry valuables visibly. Use lockers in dorms. Take photos of passport + cards. Watch out for tuk-tuk scams in Bangkok and Hanoi. Generally very safe.
Food: what to eat (and skip)
Eat street food where there's a queue of locals. Avoid raw meat/fish in cheap places. Bottled water only. Fresh fruit is fine.
Internet + SIM
Buy a local SIM at the airport (€8-€15 for 10GB). Cheaper than roaming. Or get a worldwide eSIM via Airalo.
Money saving
Sleep on night buses (€10-€20, saves a hotel night). Cook your own breakfast at hostels with kitchens. Group tours: split a private driver between 4 travelers.
