Santorini is unique in Europe: an active volcanic caldera, dark lava beaches and the famous white-blue silhouette of Oia. This attracts mass international tourism, making Santorini one of the most expensive Greek islands in high season. Smart timing makes a big difference.

By season: when to go?

Cheapest

January, February and November

The absolute trough: flights from €100-110 return (via Athens), hotels 50-70% cheaper than peak season. The caldera view exists year-round, but the island is quiet and some restaurants and shops in Oia are closed. Weather is mild for the time of year (13-19°C) but with possible wind and rain. Ideal for those who want the atmosphere without the tourist crowds.

Best value

May and early September

May: 23-25°C, warm water for the brave (21-22°C), almost no rain, Oia is pleasantly busy but not stifling. Flights from €180 return. September is just as beautiful after the peak month: 25-27°C, swimming water 24-26°C, Oia 30-40% fewer visitors than August, flights 15-25% cheaper. September is for many people the best month of the year.

Crowded + expensive

July and August (peak season)

The finest weather but also the most tourists and highest prices. Flights from €280-400 return, caldera hotels in Oia up to €500-1,500 per night. The famous sunset in Oia is surrounded by thousands of people. The Meltemi wind is strongest in August and can limit activities. If you do visit in summer: go early morning to Oia, stay in Perissa or Kamari for more affordable hotels.

Quiet and affordable

October and March/April

October is an excellent month: 20-22°C, sea still 22-23°C, few crowds and flights from €160. Easter (April) is special due to Greek Orthodox celebrations and candlelit processions, but draws extra visitors. March is the first good month for a quiet exploration of Fira and the volcano: affordable, mild, almost no queues.

Cheapest months for Santorini: flight and hotel

Santorini is well-connected from the Netherlands, but only has direct flights in high season. In the low season you fly via Athens (1-2 hours extra travel time):

  • From Eindhoven: Ryanair flies seasonally direct to Santorini (JTR), roughly May to October, flight time ca. 3 hours 15. Outside this window, fly via Athens.
  • From Schiphol: Transavia and TUI fly direct in summer. KLM and Ryanair operate year-round with a stopover in Athens.
  • Once on Santorini: The KTEL bus runs between airport, Fira, Oia and Perissa for around €1.80 per journey. ATV rental (quad) costs €25-40 per day and is the most popular way to explore the island.

Events and special reasons to visit

  • Greek Orthodox Easter (April 2027) The most special period in Greece, including Santorini: on Saturday night residents walk through Fira and Oia's alleyways with candles and church bells. Easter is on 2 May 2027 (Greek Orthodox calendar). Book hotels well in advance.
  • Santorini Jazz Festival (June/July) Annual jazz event at the Nomikos Conference Centre in Fira, with the spectacular caldera as backdrop. Free admission to some performances.
  • Atlantis Books Festival (September) The famous bookshop in Oia hosts an annual literary festival in the shoulder season: authors, readings and a quiet island. A great time to experience Oia as it was meant to be.
  • Wine harvest (August/September) Santorini is known for its Assyrtiko grapes, grown in the unique kouloura method (basket-shaped vines on volcanic soil). The harvest takes place late August to September; several wineries offer tours. Domaine Sigalas and Santo Wines are the most accessible.
  • Sunset in Oia (throughout the season) Every evening thousands gather at Oia's castle ruins for the sunset. In peak season it is genuinely crowded. In May, September or October the same view has noticeably fewer people.

Practical: transport, accommodation and budget

Santorini has a clear two-way split: the caldera side (Oia, Fira) is expensive and atmospheric, the east coast (Perissa, Kamari, Vlychada) is more affordable with beautiful black lava beaches. On a budget, stay on the east coast and take the bus or a hired scooter to Oia for the sunset.

Budget per night per person: hostel or basic studio on the east coast €20-40, apartment in Fira €60-100 per night, caldera-view hotel in Oia in peak season €200-600+ per night. The caldera view is spectacular but only truly affordable outside peak season (May, September, October).
