When is the best time to go?

May and early September are ideal: 15 to 20 degrees, almost no crowds and the sharpest prices. May offers nearly midnight sun; the long evenings are breathtaking. July and August are warmer (up to 22 degrees) but also the busiest and most expensive. For the northern lights, visit November to February, but daylight hours are then minimal.

• Midtbyen The city centre around the Torvet market: restaurants, shops and the finest views of the Nidaros Cathedral. The most central place to stay.

Flights + transport from the Netherlands

KLM flies daily direct from Schiphol (AMS) to Trondheim Vaernes (TRD) in approximately 2h10, several departures per day. Return ticket from ca. €210 when booked early. There is no direct flight from Eindhoven; travellers from southern Netherlands connect most easily via Schiphol (1.5h by train) or book a connecting flight via Oslo or Copenhagen. From Vaernes airport, bus 400 reaches the city centre in 30-40 minutes for ca. €4; a taxi costs ca. €20-30. Within the city, the AtB city bus runs for ca. €4 per journey; the tram to Lian on the Bymarka forest edge uses the same fare.
