When is the best time to go?

Santiago lies in the Southern Hemisphere, so seasons are reversed compared to the Netherlands. The best combination of weather and price is September to November (spring): temperatures of 18 to 28 degrees, few tourists, and October is typically the cheapest month for flights from Amsterdam.

March and April (autumn) are also excellent: warm and calmer than the summer peak. Avoid January and February (summer peak) if you want lower prices. June to August (winter) is the cheapest but also the least pleasant weather-wise.

Top 5 things to do in Santiago de Chile

• Sky Costanera (Gran Torre Santiago) The highest observation deck in South America, at 300 meters in the Costanera Center mall. Entry approximately $35 USD (circa 32 euros). Open Tuesday through Sunday. On a clear day you can see the snow-capped Andes on one side and the city stretching to the horizon on the other.
• Cerro San Cristobal - cable car Take the Teleferico cable car from Bellavista (Pio Nono) to the top of Cerro San Cristobal. Price: approximately CLP 3,650 return on weekdays (around 3 to 4 euros). Spectacular panoramic views over Santiago and the Andes. The new Teleferico II opened in April 2026 with an additional route. Closed on Mondays.

Insider tip: La Vega Central instead of Mercado Central

Most travel websites send visitors to the Mercado Central (the fish market), but that's the tourist version with matching prices. Where locals actually shop is La Vega Central (Antonia Lopez de Bello 743, Recoleta neighborhood, walking distance from Bellavista).

The atmosphere is more authentic, lunch cafeterias (picadas) serve daily meals for less than 3 euros, and you'll walk shoulder to shoulder with Santiaguinos. Go between 10:00 and 13:00, bring cash. Bonus: the Noche de los Museos (October): more than 100 museums open until 03:00, metro runs all night, free admission at many museums.
