Best time to visit

Rio has two good travel windows. April to June is dry, pleasantly warm (22 to 28 degrees) and much quieter than the high season: ideal combination of weather and price. September to November is similar. If you want to experience Carnival, book well in advance for late February or early March and expect higher hotel prices. Avoid January and February outside Carnival: heavy rain and extreme heat.

Best neighbourhoods in Rio de Janeiro

• Ipanema and Leblon The most tourist-friendly districts: clean beaches, good restaurants and relatively safe. More expensive, but the standard choice for first-time visitors.
• Copacabana Lively and central with the famous beachfront promenade. Slightly busier than Ipanema, but with more affordable hotels.
• Santa Teresa Hillside neighbourhood with artists, bohemian atmosphere and beautiful views. Fine to explore on foot during the day, take an Uber at night.
• Lapa The nightlife and samba heart of Rio, close to the historic city centre. Perfect for an evening of live samba.
• Barra da Tijuca Modern, spacious and family-friendly. Good beaches but further from the centre.

Top sights in Rio de Janeiro

• Cristo Reasontor (Christ the Redeemer) Iconic statue on the peak of Corcovado (710 m). Entry including transport R$58 for adults, open daily 08:00 to 19:00. Book early morning slots for the best photos and fewer crowds.
• Pao de Acucar (Sugarloaf Mountain) Cable car in two stages to the summit: first Morro da Urca (218 m), then the Sugarloaf (396 m). Stunning views across the bay and Rio. Open nearly every day.
• Parque Nacional da Tijuca The world's largest urban rainforest: waterfalls, walking trails and Christ the Redeemer. Free to enter, several trailheads.
• Museu do Amanha (Museum of Tomorrow) Futuristic science museum on the revamped harbour, designed by Santiago Calatrava. Admission R$30 for adults, free for children on Sundays. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00 to 18:00.
• Escadaria Selaron (Selaron Steps) Colourful staircase of ceramic tiles by Chilean artist Jorge Selaron, with tiles from over 60 countries. Free, located between Lapa and Santa Teresa.
• Jardim Botanico (Botanical Garden) Botanical garden planted in the 19th century: R$4 entry, open daily 08:00 to 17:00.

Flights and transport from the Netherlands to Rio de Janeiro

KLM flies six times a week direct from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Rio Galeao International Airport (GIG) in about 12 hours, on a Boeing 787-9. This is currently the only nonstop connection from the Netherlands.

Return tickets typically cost 800 to 1,100 euros outside high season and school holidays; the cheapest months are May-June and August-September. Book 2 to 3 months ahead for the best price.

From Galeao airport to the city centre and Ipanema: take the BRT (Transcarioca line) for R$4.70 to Alvorada station, then bus or taxi to Ipanema (about 1 hour total). Uber from the airport costs about R$60 to 100 depending on traffic. In the city, use the metro (R$4.70 per ride) and Uber: both safe, affordable and reliable.

What does a trip to Rio de Janeiro cost?

Rio is expensive by Brazilian standards but still reasonable compared to Western Europe. Hotels in Ipanema and Leblon cost 80 to 180 euros per night (mid-range); budget hostels in Copacabana start from 20 euros per night. A meal at a local lanchonete costs 5 to 10 euros; a sit-down restaurant 15 to 30 euros. A churrascaria (all-you-can-eat barbecue) costs around 50 euros per person - highly recommended. Metro and Uber are cheap. Budget 80 to 120 euros per day all-in for a comfortable stay.

Insider tip

Visit the Museu do Amanha on a weekday morning: far fewer tourists and better light on the facade. Then walk to the Selaron Steps (10 minutes towards Lapa): tile art from more than 60 countries, completely free. End the morning with a simple feijoada (black bean stew) for 15 euros at a local kiosk by Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas. An authentic carioca experience that most travel sites rarely mention.
