When is the best time to visit?
November to April is the dry season: clear skies and temperatures of 18 to 25 degrees. March and November are ideal travel months: low hotel prices, no school-holiday crowds and pleasant spring weather.
If you want to experience Dia de los Muertos (31 October to 2 November), book hotels 4 to 6 months in advance as everything sells out. Avoid September due to the heaviest rains and occasional flooding.
Best neighbourhoods in Mexico City
- Roma Norte Lively and authentic, with the city's best tacos, mezcalerias and cafes. Together with Condesa, the favourite neighbourhood for expats and tourists, walkable to everything.
- Condesa Art-Deco architecture along circular boulevards, brunch cafes, dogs on leashes and a relaxed Sunday feel every day. Ideal for a boutique hotel stay.
- Polanco Upscale neighbourhood right next to Chapultepec Park, home of the Museo Nacional de Antropologia, high-end restaurants (Pujol, Quintonil) and international hotels. Best choice for a comfortable first visit.
- Centro Historico The buzzing historic heart: the Zocalo, Templo Mayor, the National Palace with Diego Rivera murals and the market. Overwhelming and worth it by day, quieter in the evenings.
- Coyoacan 30 to 40 minutes by metro from the centre: a colonial village within the metropolis with the Frida Kahlo Casa Azul, the Saturday market at Jardim Centenario and the former house of Leon Trotsky.

- Palacio de Bellas Artes The Art Nouveau and Art Deco opera house on the Alameda, with freely accessible murals by Rivera, Orozco, Siqueiros and Tamayo on the upper floors. Exterior and murals free; temporary exhibitions 50 to 100 MXN.
Flights + transport from the Netherlands to Mexico City
KLM is the only airline flying non-stop from Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) to Mexico City Benito Juarez (MEX), with about 11 flights per week on a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner.
The outbound flight takes about 11h30; the return about 10h10. From Eindhoven, you always travel via Schiphol (train about 1 hour, about 18 euros). Alternatives via Paris CDG (Air France), Madrid (Iberia) or London Heathrow are sometimes 200 to 400 euros cheaper but add 3 to 5 hours of travel time.
Return tickets start from about 700 euros in low season (Jan-Feb and Sep) and rise to 1,550 to 1,900 euros in summer high season. Book 3 to 6 months in advance for the best price.
City transport: metro flat fare 5 MXN (about 0.25 euros) per trip, excellent 12-line network. Note: Uber and DiDi have been banned from picking up passengers at the airport since March 2026; for arrivals use the official Sitio taxi standard (prepaid voucher at the desk) for about 350 to 400 MXN to Roma/Condesa (about 17 to 20 euros). Uber works fine within the city.
What does a week in Mexico City cost?
Budget travellers stay in Roma/Condesa hostels or basic hotels for 25 to 55 euros per night. Mid-range boutique hotels are 55 to 100 euros. Food is very affordable if you eat locally: street tacos 1 to 2 euros each, market lunch (soup + main + agua fresca) 4 to 6 euros, dinner in Roma 15 to 22 euros per person. Museums combined: Antropologia + Chapultepec + Frida Kahlo + Templo Mayor costs about 32 euros per person in total. Metro per trip about 0.25 euros.
