The best neighbourhoods in Montpellier

  • L'Ecusson (historic centre) The shield-shaped medieval heart, almost entirely car-free. Packed with centuries-old lanes, wine bars, brasseries and independent shops. Place de la Comedie (locally nicknamed "L'Oeuf" for its oval shape) is the social hub.
  • Antigone Just east of L'Ecusson. Designed in the 1980s by Catalan architect Ricardo Bofill, inspired by ancient Greece. Colossal neo-classical facades and large public squares give a unique, almost theatrical feel. Free to explore.
  • Beaux-Arts/Boutonnet A bohemian, village-like neighbourhood north of the centre, popular with students and artists. A friendly market square, galleries and quieter bistros than the centre.
  • Port Marianne Modern riverside development along the Lez with contemporary architecture and public art, including Jean Nouvel's city hall. Pleasant for an evening stroll along the quays.
  • Arceaux An everyday neighbourhood under the historic aqueduct arches of the Arceaux. Every Tuesday and Saturday from 07:00 to 13:30, one of the finest markets in southern France takes place here.
