Malaga and Alicante are both popular from the Netherlands thanks to direct connections from Eindhoven, a sunny climate and relatively low prices compared to Barcelona or Madrid.

The main difference is the focus: Malaga is a vibrant cultural city with an extensive museum circuit and excellent day trip options, while Alicante is more compact and beach-oriented. All prices are indicative and based on return flights outside school holidays.

Who is each city for?

Choose Malaga if you are...

A culture lover or city tripper who also wants sunshine. A foodie tired of tourist tapas. A traveller who values day trips highly. Someone staying longer than 3 days who wants to explore more.

Choose Alicante if you are...

A beach lover who wants to relax and not plan much. A traveller on a tighter budget. A family that prefers a compact, easy-to-navigate city. A short-trip planner (a long weekend of 3 days).

Our verdict

Malaga is the richer experience: more museums, better day trip options and a fast-growing food scene. But that comes at a price: flights are more expensive, hotels somewhat higher and the best beaches are outside the city. Alicante is more compact, cheaper and friendlier for a short trip. The beach is within walking distance and the castle is free.

If you are unsure: choose Alicante for a relaxed long weekend, choose Malaga if you have a week or want to combine day trips.
