Most airlines allow flying until week 32 with no certificate, and week 36 with a doctor's note (for twins: week 32). After week 36, airlines refuse boarding.

Morning sickness is usually past, the belly is still manageable and you can walk easily. Many couples plan their babymoon around the 20-week ultrasound.

Mediterranean: Mallorca, Crete

Short flights (2.5 hours), modern medical care, plenty of pools and shade. Avoid hiking in 30+ heat.

Italian lake district

Como, Garda: cool air, easy walking, great food. By car from the Netherlands or fly to Milan.

Portuguese coast: Algarve

Mild climate, beautiful beaches, very baby-friendly hotels. €600/person for a week.

Iceland

Cool weather, dramatic landscapes, no hiking required for the best views. €1200/person for 5 days.

What NOT to do

Skip altitude (Andes, Himalayas) above 2500m. Avoid hot springs above 39°C, no saunas above 60°C. Yes to prenatal yoga, gentle swimming.

Pack list

Pregnancy leggings, support pillow, compression socks for flight, prenatal vitamins, copy of pregnancy record, midwife contact details.

Frequently asked questions

Up to which week of pregnancy can I fly?

Most airlines allow you to fly without a doctor's certificate up to week 32. From week 28, KLM and Lufthansa require a 'fit-to-fly' letter from your midwife. After week 36, airlines generally refuse to carry you.

When is the best time for a babymoon?

Weeks 18 to 26 are the sweet spot: morning sickness is over, your bump is still manageable and you have enough energy for day trips. Many couples plan this around the 20-week scan.

Which babymoon destinations are suitable from the Netherlands?

Mallorca, Crete and the Algarve are popular: short flight (2.5 hours from Amsterdam), modern hospital and shaded poolside options. The Italian Lakes (Como, Garda) by car are also comfortable. Reykjavik is calm and cool for those not seeking heat.

What should I avoid on a babymoon?

Destinations above 2,500 metres, hot springs above 39 degrees Celsius, saunas above 60 degrees and destinations with malaria risk are not recommended during pregnancy.
