Babymoon: 10 destinations and what to know
The babymoon (last trip before baby arrives) is best between weeks 14-28 of pregnancy. Here are the safest destinations and most important tips.
When can you safely fly
Most airlines allow flying until week 32 with no certificate, and week 36 with a doctor's note (for twins: week 32). After week 36, airlines refuse boarding.
Best window: weeks 18-26
Morning sickness is usually past, the belly is still manageable and you can walk easily. Many couples plan their babymoon around the 20-week ultrasound.
Mediterranean: Mallorca, Crete
Short flights (2.5 hours), modern medical care, plenty of pools and shade. Avoid hiking in 30+ heat.
Italian lake district
Como, Garda: cool air, easy walking, great food. By car from the Netherlands or fly to Milan.
Portuguese coast: Algarve
Mild climate, beautiful beaches, very baby-friendly hotels. €600/person for a week.
Iceland
Cool weather, dramatic landscapes, no hiking required for the best views. €1200/person for 5 days.
What NOT to do
Skip altitude (Andes, Himalayas) above 2500m. Avoid hot springs above 39°C, no saunas above 60°C. Yes to prenatal yoga, gentle swimming.
Travel insurance with pregnancy coverage
Most insurance excludes pregnancy. Specifically check 'pregnancy and birth' coverage at Allianz or AIG. Costs €15-€30 extra per trip.
Pack list
Pregnancy leggings, support pillow, compression socks for flight, prenatal vitamins, copy of pregnancy record, midwife contact details.
Choose direct flights
Connections drain you. Pay €50-€100 extra for direct. Choose aisle seat (easier toilet access).
