When to book for New Year's Eve 2026?
New Year's Eve is the busiest travel period of the year after the summer holidays. Hotels in Edinburgh, Berlin and London fill up months in advance in popular neighbourhoods. Those who book in September or October pay 30 to 50 percent less than those who wait until November or December. Flights follow the same pattern: the cheapest tickets go early.
Practically speaking: most people travel 29 or 30 December (returning 1 or 2 January). Three nights is the standard length for a New Year's city break. Four nights gives more buffer for potential return journey disruption on 1 January.
Edinburgh: Hogmanay
Edinburgh Hogmanay is in the world's top three New Year celebrations. Funchal holds the Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display in the world measured by the simultaneously illuminated surface area. On 31 December the city fires hundreds of launch points simultaneously from the hillsides around the bay. The fireworks are free and visible throughout the city, from the beach and at sea. No ticket system required.
